So, I really want to get this http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16842101137 Back-up UPS, mainly for the AVR side of it all, but as I was looking at different ones at the egg, I ran into this http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16842101125 one and the top review concerned me. It sais that it doesn't work when being powered by his 10,000 watt generator. Is that true with ALL the Back-up UPS's ? Or maybe just the APC's ?, or maybe even just that model ? How would you know ? I have a 10KW generator tied right into my breaker panel for when the power goes out, which is actually fairly often, and it would bum me right out if I couldn't run the comp during an outage. Any clues how to figure that stuff out or what makes the difference..?

/bump, anyone know about this stuff or know of a forum that might ?

Your question is better suited for the Power Supplies section of these forums. PM a mod and ask them to move this thread.

You can start your education about UPSs with this FAQ.

IMO he is having a problem with the output waveform of his generator being distorted and the UPS is switching to battery. APC has some models that are designed to run from a generator but I think that is one of the models that person is having a problem with. It could be just a generator side issue.

Ahh, sweet, thanks a ton Spectre !!! So I should have no issue running off of this one if it's powered from a decent correctly running generator then right ?

If your generator produces a near sine wave output, you shouldn't have any issues. If your generator produces a square wave, you will have issues with the majority of sub $500-$1000 UPSs out there.

It should but I don't see it listed as being a model that can have its input power tolerances loosened in the software. However, if you view the documentation on it it allows you to change the high/low transfer point and the voltage sensitivity which is basically what the other models allow also.

Wow, this stuff is a world unto it's own, lots to know. I'll have to check the Gen out closer and see just exactly what it is/does. Never really mattered much before other than making sure I had gas for it :p
