Backup Solution for email server?

Morning all,

After a catastrophic failure of a HDD on our IMAP email server, my boss is finally going to pony up cash for a RAID solution... so here's my dilemma...

3 Servers:
1 Email
2 Business Opertaions

1) New server, with SAN attached, running virtual PCs

2) Old servers, toss in a RAID 5 card, a few HDDs, and be done with it..

Option 1 would easily be a few grand, but should have the most scalability/redundancy

Option 2 would be dirty, but wouldnt consolidate all the storage into 1 easily managable location.


I would appreciate your insights/ideas on this as well.. I think tape would not be effective, since the volume of data exceeds the capacity of tapes, and we want to keep this as automated as possible.

Either way, you'll want to transfer the data onto tape somewhere along the long. SAN is OK for 1st tier backup, but transfering to tape ensures against viruses and other unforseen problems. SAN solution is also probably a lot more costly. What kind of a SAN unit were you looking at?
 
Somebody please change the title of this thread. Title asks for a "backup solution," yet "going to pony up cash for a RAID solution" appears in the OP.

RAID != backup.

Yes tape sucks, but it's marvelously effective against corruption, viruses, and accidental modification.

With that said, I like option 2 as an uptime tool.
