Background info:
I recently came into possession of a new in box Rampage III Extreme mobo (yes, a rare find considering how old they are!)
Out of boredom, a love of building, and attempting to benefit from the mobos 2 x onboard SATA 3 ports for my pair of Crucial M4s in Raid0, I am going to make the swap from my Rampage II to the III (I have a new case I want to try out too).
I know from a previous experiment of going from my Rampage II to an Asus P6T6 WS Revolution with the exact same hardware, Windows 7 booted up just fine and handled the change amazingly well. (ie, I did not reinstall Windows. I just plugged all the hardware from the rampage II into the P6T6 and turned it on.) So, I suspect going from the Rampage II to the Rampage III would also work fine with no windows 8 reinstall IF i were to use the Rampage III's SATA 2 ports, which use the same controller (ICH10R) as the Rampage II. (again, my windows install is on a pair of SSDs in Raid 0). But, I want to take advantage of the new board's integrated aftermarket SATA 3 controller (Marvell® PCIe 9128 ), and I'm pretty certain it wont recognize my pair of drives that were created in Raid on the Rampage IIs controller. Though it would be a nice surprise if it would.
So what backup + and restore programs are out there now days (or does Win 8 have a decent one)?
Ideas:
Do a full image backup of the Rampage II setup using some (insert name) program. Build the rampage III setup, create new Raid0 volume, and then attempt to restore the image from whatever medium combo this program is capable of using outside the windows environment? Ie, boot it from an external drive (which I have plenty) and then restore from that?
Do some kind of full "program only" (ie, not windows OS?) backup of the Rampage II setup. Build rampage III setup, create new Raid 0, and then install a fresh Windows 8 Pro (I have the Win 8 pro OEM DVD). Then, using this program (insert name here), attempt to restore just the "programs and windows settings" I backed up. Is this possible?
Any other ideas?
My goal here is to obviously avoid reinstalling all my programs and window settings.
Thx backup/restore guys for helping me out in this strange scenario.
