I'd like to do a video card upgrade in about 2 months. I am currently running a 5870 2gb Toxic card.

I like to play all sorts of games and like to turn up the settings when possible. My gaming machine is also my work machine. I run AutoCad 2011LT. I will update that software every 2 years. I'd also like to learn Revit and anticipate doing that sometime this year.

My 5870 card runs Autocad LT just fine. I saw no problems when I upgraded to it from an 8800gts 640mb. The funny thing was that it ran autocad smooth, something people told me to be worried about. On games it had problems from time to time. It used to go to a brown screen and lock up when playing that coop helicopter mission in BF3 or within the first several minutes of Assassins Creed, and every once in a long while on GTA 4. Every other game it has been great.

I game/work on a 24" 1080 screen.

I can afford the 7970 or the 680gtx. When the time comes I will likely be looking for one of the non-ref cards with a great cooler. Since both cards will game well is there one that is superior to the other for AutoCad LT and Revit?

Autocad LT is mainly for editing 2D, and viewing 3D, so you have no need to upgrade for it. I also use a 5870 with Autocad, and the drafting studio I work with uses firepro cards just because they are professional grade, but I see little differences except the slightly better appering 3D models.

Revit is more CPU dependant, again, a 5870 is more than fine for it. I really doubt you will see any differences just for working.

I've also used nvidia cards, and same goes for them & quadro cards.

Now if you just WANT to upgrade, that's a different story... ;)
 
Yes, I WANT to upgrade. If both the 7970 and the 680gtx give me similar AutoCad LT experience to what I have now then it won't matter which one I get. I can just choose based on what makes me feel the warmest inside. I was unsure about Revit though as I have no experience with it. I would not want to change my CPU to accommodate it since it would require me to change out more stuff, like MB. I have a decent CPU so I am hopeful that will be ok. Mainly what I am seeking is to upgrade game performance with no fall off in AutoCad LT performance and be able to use this setup for Revit too.
 
Revit is CPU bound. I believe I've read of a 3rd party app which uses CUDA for rendering only, but it looks like more trouble than it's worth given the rendering speed already.

One bit of advice I give to everybody, also look for the quietest card, you're sitting next to it ALOT every day...
