Hi guys,

I'm looking for something to use with my headphones (sennheiser 600). I want a volume knob on my desk, and the ability to bypass the speakers when the head phones are plugged in.

What i've found so far that seems to will work are the AudioEngine D1 and the Topping TP30.

Does anyone have any experience with these units to help me narrow down which one I should buy.

Currently, I am using the on board audio from the motherboard to an pretty old logitech z5000? series speaker. My logitech speakers have a loose ground cable that causes static every time i turn the volume knob. I'm planning on replacing the Logitech as well.

The Audioengine D1 is more of a "pure" DAC compared to the Topping. The D1 has line-level outputs, which you can run into active monitors or a dedicated amp, while the Topping has an integrated power amp and high-level outputs for passive speakers.

Having never compared the two directly, I'd probably go with the D1 if its a DAC you want. It takes USB and optical so it might be more useful to you if you're sticking with your onboard audio chipset. It also gives you the flexibility of attaching active speakers or an amp to it later.
 
The D1 is fine so long as you understand it won't do anything more than stereo.

I would get a creative Z + a decent headphone amp for the 600s.

i have an almost 10 year pair of Focal Chorus book shelf speakers in storage. I'm wondering if i can hook those up to a DAC. These used to be my rear surround sound speakers, but since then i've gone with in-ceiling speakers.

Audio engine makes a N22, but adding that up with the D1 is starting to get a bit pricey. The audio engine A2 speakers are only $199....
 
With the Dayton Audio DTA-100a, would it be possible to connect a powered subwoofer down the road?

How would you connect a subwoofer, just split the input with a splitter?
 
If the subwoofer has high level inputs you can run the speaker wire through a high low converter built into the subwoofer. This will also make the subwoofer volume control of of the amplifier.
