I own a pair of Audioengine A5's, now they are called 5+ i think, I was thinking about adding the S8 subwoofer that they offer to the mix and do a 2.1 setup. I had the S8 before and returned it. It was good but I was not impressed with it.

What are my other options for the same price range or below for better sound? I see bunch of people seem to go the polk audio route when it comes to subs.
Btw, I need a powered sub, my speakers are self powered and I am not planning on getting a receiver.
 
For the money, this one is pretty well liked over at AVSforum. Looks like it's on sale for 350 shipped right now, and it tends to drop to around 300 shipped periodically.

I also thought this was an interesting deal when doing a little sub research of my own recently.

There's potential caveats and issues with most subs at these price points and quite a few options. I'd suggest reading up before pulling the trigger. Personally? I ended up going with an SVS.

I would recommend the Dayton SUB-1200. It is a powered subwoofer that is capable of going low enough for any use, whether it's movies or music. If you do not have the space for the 12' inch the 10' inch Dayton SUB-1000 is another good option as well.

If you decide to purchase a receiver sometime in the future, by all means go with an HSU subwoofer. They go low and are musical. HSU's customer service is good to deal with as well.
 
I've used a JBL PB-10 with mine. Not the best sub in the world, but musical enough to not get in the way of the A5's. Do you have the new A5's? With the variable line out? That's what annoyed me about my "old" A5's - you had to adjust the sub volume AND the speaker volume.

I finally gave up and just adjusted the source volume to control the system volume. Not the most elegant solution, but it worked.
 
I have the old A5's and yeah they need manual adjustment, it is a pain in the butt. When I bought them I did not want to deal with an external amplifier so they seemed to be the best built in amped speaker system in my price range. I even had the S8 for a short while and the combo works incredibly, but not in every situation. For example playing Thriller in flac format with the proper crossover adjustment was an incredible experience that my friend can't regenerate with his B.W speakers, $1000 receiver and a brand name sub that I don't remember. But if I compared my system to his in every aspect like movies, classical music, rock, metal, pop, hip hop and even other songs of michael jackson, my system used to get trumped. I alwasy thought it was the sub since I have been very happy with the high's and mids of the A5's. I think I am looking for a 12inch sub, that can go pretty low and at the same time fast enough to keep up with double bass drums in old school metal songs. :)
