I'm thinking of picking up a Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz Prescott 'E' (socket 478) to replace my Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz 533MHzBUS (socket 478). Everywhere I go to find something out about the chip, I'm told it runs super hot. At around 80 degree's celsius under-load. Right now I have a standard CPU heat-sink and fan. So I'm inquiring what would be the best heatsink and fan for using this chip. Thanks.

put your cash towards a conroe system...

the jump you are about to take will be a little disapointing - unless of course you can't afford more... then in that case, pick up a p4 3.4 - i think i saw a good deal on one of those recently for under a bill

I think you will notice a nice difference especially in multitasking being the 3.0E will have Hyperthreading and a 800mhz front side bus. If you can find a good deal on a 3.2ghz or a 3.4ghz that would be even better.

As for a heat sink, I have this one, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=35-118-112&depa=0

and highly recomend it. It should be able to keep your new cpu nice and cool. A prescott runs hotter then a 478 northwood but the zalman will keep it cool enough.

I've got a Prescott and I'm quite happy with it. Mine's a 3.0 running @ 3.4 and it's been bomb proof. Quite likely one of the most stable machines I've ever had. Encoding videos mine gets up to the mid 70C range, but that truly is a peak temp. I run a Swiftech heat sink with a Panasonic Panaflow fan and am very happy. Conroe is on the map but the truth is that this system runs anything I want to, and quite well. Will I replace it, sure, but it'll be a while.

FWIW - B.B.S.

Get the Asus C-479 adapter + Pentium M, your motherboard supports it, and you'll basically have a Core Solo system.

I'm doing it primarily to get better performance in BF2 and DoD: Source. Should it work?

Yes,

GREAT Information on them:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=62366&highlight=ct-479
Read that thread and you should be able to make a decision on which processor fits your budget and performance desired.

CT-479 adapter:

People are forgetting that just several months ago, Pentium M + CT-479 was the thing EVERYONE was using at XtremeSystems to break world records, etc..

It was a little bit more then several months ago, it was during the age of AGP X850XTs and so forth. But an OC dothan is still a good system today.

ok so almost a year ago + or -

I remember last fall everyone was trying to get their hands on the Asus motherboard that had s478 + PCIe to use the CT-479 adapter in it.

Should I notice an increase going from my current CPU to a 3.0E Prescott?

I noticed a big difference going from a 2.4 533 to a 3.2 prescott 800. Of course I got a new board and double the memroy but just in windows it runs a lot faster. I still have it today, runs every thing just fine.

Prescott's a great chip. My 3.0E doesn't run too hot... ~49C full load, 32C idle.

Gee, I happen to have a couple of Northwoods that could use a good home. I have a 3.2C and a 3.0C available. These chips run cooler than the Prescott so if you want a very happy middle ground PM me please, thanks.

Go for the 3.2 C. Northwood is actually a tiny bit fast at the same clocks then prescott and run cooler too.

I have a 3.0 E prescott (478) thats clocked at 3.6GHz, idles 40 degrees and 50 under load with the zalman cnps9500 and AS5. thats not very high.
