FAH is competing with my miners

purists can bitch all they want, the mining pays for the folding around here

I can key FAH off and on and watch my GPU utilization drop

FAH is turned down 20% until it learns how to play nice

not FAH's problem you don't know how to set application priority correctly.. not that stanford gives a rats ass what effect it has on bitcrap.

but since i'm in a very slightly good mood right now.. set the -SMP X (X being the number of threads F@H can use) so that there is 1 core free for the GPU's.. so if you have a quad core set it to -smp 3. problem solved.. a little searching you would of figured this out on your own.

I actually found the 12.12 catalysts seemed to fix the conflict between mining and -smp 8 on my rig...

You have 3 options:
1) Do as above
2) Stop Mining
3) Stop Folding

For the uninitiated, at $0.22 (US, not Canadian) I don't really see how mining can make any money at all.

Sorry Pocatello, I did not help matters with my opening attitude, was annoyed with it last night.

Yes guys, I know how to set SMP cores. It was running good with all 8 folding for a long time, now I have to pull back to 6 to avoid conflict. not sure what changed.

I am also aware of Stanford's traditional cavalier attitude toward contributors, however "plays well with other applications and doesn't slow your computer down" has been one of the main selling points when I recruit new folders, they would do well not to lose that.

Bitcrap or not, it pays the bill, like it or not, not all of us can afford to just keep building 4p systems and folding for free.

12.12? my ccc says 11.12 and says it is up to date, I will look into that thank you.

I am not stopping anything, but that FAH does not deny cycles to user applications has been one of its key features. If they can not respect what I want to do with my systems they will be denied cores.

I probably meant 11.12. Whatever just recently got installed.

On the prior version, I had to do -smp 7 and heard the two miner agents to their own core, but after the update, I seem to be fine going back to mining with smp 8.

Which version of guiminer are you running? I'm still on the 7/1/11 version...

8/24/11

that was my experience as well, I was able to go SMP 8 some time ago and still get 97% GPU utilization, that was very cool. Last night I had ccc open and noticed that it was back to its old ways, but worse.

with SMP 7 and both miners set to the same core I'm only getting 90% GPU

Huh? Bitcoins are hovering around $6.50 right now.

no doubt, I am pulling just under a kilowatt at the wall, I pay the monthly power bill for the rig in 3 days and it heats this end of the house for free

and yes...it folds for 33 24/7

I guess it all comes down to how many can be generated per time. At $6.50 I'd need to mine and be able to sell 25 coins per month to just break even pulling 1kWh.

correct, and right now you can mine about 1BTC/day for that power

Time to start a poll: How many of us recently moved into the doghouse after extensive hardware upgrades?

No dog house here. I paid big bucks to get rid of the 3 wives I had. (separate times of course)

Oh and it was worth the cost.

"separate times" ? no pun intended ;) . I cruise right past the doghouse and head down to my 'mancave' with my PC's, beer/wine fridge and bigscreen. So far I've been able to avoid the cost. She never knows when I upgrade anyways :D

me been in the dog house since i told the wife i had 1k worth of bitcoins i sold for a new lga 2011 rig:( all i hared since then is you cloud have bought me so much stuff whit that i only told her becues she laughed at me the whole time saying i was wasting my time

It appears I have unintentionally derailed the thread. I apologize.

To get back on track, yes, 2P and especially 4P g34 systems, are expensive. How are some of us 4P owners mitigating the the startup cost:

1) look for used components
2) eBay (yes, hold your nose and take a look there)
3) sell your 'old' hardware from a Folding farm and consolidate your resources to fewer, faster machines
4) turn off all lights, heating/air conditioning in the home to save money...

Just joking about '4).'
