Atomic HD 3870 Released

I am in the same boat as you dude. I am waiting for some serious reliable benches with the 3870x2. If its nothing impressive, I will likely go with the atomics.
 
are these atomic's, single slot? Unlike the ones with the reference cooler?

if you want four full HD3870s in crossfire, this is the way to go. I agree its too much but there are no single slot after market coolers (which is odd because there seems like there is a demand).

in some cases it might be possible to find a board that has the right spacing between each slot, allowing for 3 dual slotted coolers on the board, and the last actually having the cooler extended below the board. You'd probibly need to strap on an accelero S2 tho.

I assume it's clocked to stock speeds, not factory OCed like the Atomic, but Sapphire has another single slot card for those wanting four full 3870's in Crossfire:

And..that card is $249.00, not $299.00 currently. Same price Newegg has on most of their 3870's. And..it's blue, instead of red...kind of like the blue PCB and heatsink/fan on that one in a way..but I also have blue LED fans and a blue cold cathode in my case.
 
So much for the price being only $15 more than the normal version. Typical Newegg stealing money from their customers with an overly huge inflated price. Are they insane?

Yeah, what a great company they must be. Not.

I would even bet Newegg is selling it without the case and extra software, just like they did the normal Sapphire cards.

Yes, I do know it has a different heatsink/cooler then the single slot I linked, and have read up on the Vapor-X a tiny bit. I just pointed out the other card since it is a less expensive card that also has a single slot cooler, albeit I assume a more standard/typical one. And..assuming Newegg isn't gutting the retail package (I've never had that happen personally...as an aside, what would they do with an empty metal case marked "Atomic", some game disks problably marked "Not for retail sale" and so forth...that and under the Atomic card's listing, they have a link to the Sapphire site promoting the Atomic, which lists everything in the retail package...), the Atomic does come with a fairly extensive package..I think even a cold cathode light (don't know what color). But...if people don't want/need that, the cards for fifty dollars less I linked are still IMO an attractive option. And hey, I like the all blue look too..not that such would be a major factor, but still.

Only if you're forced at gunpoint to buy a "branded" one from BB, CC, etc.

Otherwise, it's a $2.00 cable in bulk.

Even retail you can get them for around $5.00, from places like monoprice.com.
 
it comes with a lot of crap, but come on, $80 of crap? and newegg even has the nerve to not list the clock speeds. sapphire has another single slot 3870, given it doesn't come with HDMI cables and cold cathodes (WTF), but it's only $230 on NCIX and $250 on Newegg.

Newegg's pricing is just out of hand and ridiculous, and I'm starting to think it's just not worth their slightly faster service to deal with all that crap.

LOL..Newegg is a store like any other. They aren't always going to be the cheapest. As an aside, I just looked on NCIX's USA site. Yes..the other single slot is about $230.00 USD, but as of the time stamp of my post, it's special order, 1 to 2 weeks. They only have the double slot in stock and ready to ship right now. And I didn't take too much time, but I didn't see the Atomic at NCIX, at least not the USA page, didn't check the Canadian. So...I'll ask this back, is it worth it to you to pay $20.00 USD more to be able to get the card now (well, at least shipped "now"), or is it worth it to you to save $20.00 to wait a week or two..assuming NCIX's shipping cost is the same price as Newegg's on that card. Me, it would be...but for some sure, they might be willing to wait a week or two on the special order to save 20 bucks.

The Atomic comes with a fairly large software bundle too, a $30.00 game voucher, what they claim is a better cooler, it's packed in a metal briefcase and has the cathode and the cable like you mentioned. Clock speed I know is 825 on the GPU, memory I want to say is overclocked too but I don't know by how much. No idea the clockspeed on the cheaper single slot, been assuming it's stock. Now, does that make the Atomic worth 50.00 more? (Won't use 80 bucks since NCIX doesn't have the atomic at all as of this moment and the other card is special order)...I don't know. Maybe..but Sapphire does claim the price on the Atomic SHOULD only be 10 to 20 dollars over a normal 3870, so yes there is that..Newegg should probably only sell the atomic for 270 or so. But..that brings me back to pointing out that hey, Newegg is just a store. I bet there's been times when NCIX was the first to get a product in, and they charged more then they should have initially, then let the price drop as other places got the item in. Haven't check that to be sure, but I'd almost bet on it. All of them do that, it's not a "sin" unique to Newegg. It's called being a merchant.

Me...I do shop at Newegg..but I also do shop around. And I don't curse them if I do find it cheaper someplace else, or claim they are doing "crap".

Okay, I haven't slept tonight, bit of insomnia, so I'm rambling. ;) Guess this is my very longwinded way of pointing out a bit of extra info.

I generally agree with you, although it stings that if I were to go to Best Buy or Fry's, I'd be buying these 3870 cards for $220, which is MSRP. It makes Newegg's price gouging that much worse to have them inflating an already inflated price due to this weird-ass bundle.

I'm pretty sure that card doesn't come in a metal case. I'm guessing that is just what Sapphire sent to the review beds to show off. At least I didn't see anything about it in the Newegg product photos.
 
I am pretty sure that the retail package does come with the metal case and the cathode and orange box, etc. It's really quite a shame. It's not worth the extra price for $300 most people will go for a higher clocked 8800GT.
