I know the intel atom is far from the best chip out there, but I was wondering if I put an SSD in my netbook would I even notice any performance upgrade?
 
I did. I put an Intel X-25V in my HP Mini 311 netbook (which has a single core Atom and ION graphics) and there was a pronounced performance difference. Wakes from sleep in like 4 secs.
 
I think you got more performance since you have the ION graphics Windows can use that to handle AERO where as in this case my chip set is left with the burden of AERO.

I think it would still make a big difference in snappiness.. It would be as extreme as putting an SSD on a high end gaming rig, but still should be a noticeable performance increase.
