Hey guys, I searched through the forums for info on Atom 330 builds. I'm interested in building a small pc around the Atom for use with my HDTV's particularly for Netflix streaming and Hulu watching... I dont plan on necessarily streaming 1080p or anything like that my TV could only handle 720p anyways. I know some people were disappointed with the intel on-board video but would it be enough for Netflix/Hulu/Email?? If not could I throw in a cheap pci video card and take care of it??

The plan would be to run Windows XP SP3 pro.

Alternatively I have a extra system sitting around in a large midtower case that has
Athlon X2 4600+
4Gb Memory
74Gb raptor
DvD drive
ECS KN1 SLI Lite

However I think the MB is too big for small media case like I would like to use, but maybe I can pick up a new 939 MB ??

Well if you have an extra system around I'd use that especially since its gonna be more powerful than the Atom.

But having said that, I have a small Shuttle X27D which uses the 330. It runs 24/7 with Windows Server 2008 Standard on it. Threw Orb on it to stream my music to me while I'm at work and I'm just starting to get around to putting videos on it. The great thing about Orb is it can stream to a phone as well. So I have Kinoma Player on my Treo Pro and can watch vids or listen to music on it without having to even go buy a larger memory card.

For what you want to do, it should be fine. Single core Atoms can play up to 720p with GMA950 just fine so the dual core 330 should be no different. Don't skimp on hard drive speed (ALWAYS go with a 7200RPM at least) and don't skimp on RAM. Max RAM out if you can. My system ended up around $400...not counting Server2k8 since I got it from a coworker in the CS program at my university.

So far I love it... I'm running XP pro SP3. I tested out Hulu/Netflix/DVD/YouTube its all good. I was worried about HD but it handled it fine... I'm actually really impressed with how it handles everything these processors/systems are pretty incredible for for their size/heat/power. Maybe not the perfect solution for everyone but much better than I was expecting.
 
Im just going to order an intel atom330 board so im glad your worked out so well, I wonder what an SSD would do to help this system
 
I thought about using and SSD, but the primary gains would be boot time, heat, power. I wont mention the negatives, but for my use it just wasn't necessary I leave it running or sleeping.

The biggest improvement you can make on this system depends upon use but for me it would probably be a dedicated pci video card to handle DVD/h.264,and HD decoding without bugging the processor. When I was researching the build a lot of people mentioned the loud chipset fan, but I haven't had any issue with that.
 
Um its called pci... its what came before the technology you mentioned and before agp.... you have probably seen pictures :rolleyes:
