ATITool "automatic" overclocking any good?

Thinking about running it on my X800XT. How accurate is it? If I leave it on over night, its there a risk it will fry the videocard (fully automatically) or is it sensibel enough to reduce speeds when the card can't take any more? Does it come close the reaching the highest stable oc possible?

It did a deng fine job of finding the max OCs on my 9800XT the first time I OCed it.. It just kept going till a couple of artifacts flickered on the 3d model, and backed it down about 5mhz for each. I tested the clocks in-game and they were stable. Man, I love this program.

It seemed to push my core until it hardlocked, but that was on this x800xt. Could be the H2O or v.mods though. For the most part it didn't work for me.

Anytime I've tried it on a stock card that hasn't been tampered with it has been fine, but with my watercooled X800XT-PE fully voltmodded it doesn't work as well as it should....because the way I've got it running, this card locks up due to lack of voltage (between 680 and 690MHz) before the core produces artifacts...and sometimes it keeps raising the clock until it hits a tad to high and locks up.

if you haven't messed around with your card at all you can by all means just let it run overnight, just make sure you go into the "artifact scanning" section of the options and set a certain amount of time for it to keep testing for.....otherwise it'll sit at any given clock rate and test for days and days if it has to to find an artifact. Set it to any amount of time that makes sense to you, somewhere around an hour should be fine....but you could also go really hardcore like I usually do and make it test any given clock speed for 12 hours straight without finding an artifact to call it "stable". ;)

How long does this process take? I tried it and it took 5 hours and then I said forget it.

It depends on what you set that time too....if you dont change any settings it'll scan for a good while......however, even if you set it to scan for an artifact for 10 minutes, it could find one after 9 and start all over again.

you never really know.....but its something you should do before you go to bed....and yes, it IS worth it in teh long run to take a tad longer.

Time to find max OC with auto overclock utility = who knows.

Time to find max OC with your own right hand = 30 minutes.

It is true that I can sit down and mess with benchmarks for a half hour to find my "Max OC" for my card.....but that doesn't mean its going to be artifact free for extended periods of time in all of my games. The only reason I still use ATITool for the auto overclock is for my main partition. I set it to sit and scan any given clock for 3600 seconds (1 hour) so that I pretty much know that my games'll be fine.....because there's nothing like an OC artifact to "ruin the mood" and take you out of a movie.
