Are ATI's trilinear optimizations new (as in implemented around the same time as the X800 series)? Or have they been present for some time now?

They have been in the 9600 series for over a year now, but as far as I know were never in the 9800's.
 
Yeah, they were in the 9600's for over a year and nobody noticed them.
