First, a little background. I was using this card on my main rig, which is water cooled so I flashed the bios on the card to the XTX version, and infact was able to overclock it even higher then the XTX's rated specs. I ran it for probably 8 months to a year without a single issue other then the normal driver problems or windows incompatibilities. Recently I purchased an 8800GTX so I thought I would be nice and give my wife my X1900XT for her machine. Here is where my problems began. Her machine is actually almost all the parts out of my machine that I have upgraded. The only difference is I am using a rosewill 500 watt PSU in her machine. I have a crapload of hard drives and my new board only had 6 sata ports so I had to give her some of my sata drives and just share them over our network, not really related, but it could be. With the card in her system, and back on factory cooling, and flashed back to the factory bios, I cannot run any games, anything 3D at all. If it stays at the desktop, it can do it, like 3DSMax runs totally fine on it. If I try to run farcry or any kind of full screen 3D app it crashes, and not to the desktop, the screen gets all garbled and the system is dead, I have to hard reset it. She has 6 hard drives in her system, an 3800+ X2 overclocked to 2.5ghz, 2gb of ram, everything else is onboard. The board is a DFI Lanparty NF4 SLI DR Expert Edition. I didn't skimp on her system, but I'm afraid maybe the PSU needs more juice. Does this sound like it could be the problem? I'm thinking of creating a restore point on my system, and installing the card back in mine with the air cooling and doing some testing. If its the PSU though I could just get her an OCS 600 watter or something and be done with it.

Sorry for the long rant but I know you guys like to get/require all the details.

It sounds like the PSU... I know the DFI NF4 board is picky on the amps on the rails...
Since its only happening when loading 3d aps... Sounds like when the card needs the juice to do 3d the psu just cant deliver. But this is just one mans opinion...
 
Thanks for the help, I checked with that calculator to the best of my knowledge and it recommended at least a 665 generic PSU or 385 Decent PSU. She has the generic one so I guess I'll go and order her a good one from Newegg. I'll keep you guys posted weather or not this fixes it, but I'm pretty certain that it will.

Yeah, I had an Enermax LIberty 500 watt that wouldn't even keep up with a 1900xt and 4 hard drives and my 3 fans...It was fine for about 5 months, then I started getting artifacts, and black screens, crashes, freezes.I got a PC Power and Cooling 610 watt, much better now.

I can't believe this card is so inefficient...
 
Well, I got the new PSU in and installed it lastnight. It did not fix the problem. So I took the video card out and stuck it in my machine where it used to reside. It doesn't work on my system either. I am thinking when I flashed it to the XTX and then reflashed it back to the XT, it didn't take. It acts like its an overheating issue, but I mean it doesnt even get to a 3D screen, it just goes black and then garbled patterns come back on the screen, then it bsod's and reboots. Does anyone here know anything else it could be if its not the bios problem?
 
I believe you damaged the core when you changed back to the factory cooling. I've changed heatsink+fans hundreds of times with no issue, but recently destroyed a BFG7950GT when I switched it to a Zalman cu900. Remove the heatsink again and clean off the core... Have a GOOD HARD LOOK.

Unfortunately, it happens :(
