Hi, this Thursday I am going to be buying a new video card. All I am really buying this card for is to get better FPS in the only game I play (counter-strike). Right now, i'm running a GeForce 4 MX440 64mb and it just doesn't cut it. I was wondering how much better the ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128MB will differ from my current card and how it will run on the upcoming HL2/CS:Source game. Also, I was wondering if I went with the NVidia GeForce FX 5700ultra 128mb, if the 9800pro would be ALOT better than the 5700ultra, or if only by a little. Please post your comments on what you think I should do. I don't want to spend above $250 so don't recommend the x800 or something. Thanks in advanced.

I think the 9800pro is the better choice of the two, and yes you will see a huge difference!

Yeah, big improvement.. and the 9800Pro is the best card for under 200 or so US Dollars.

Get one and have fun.

p.s. (it runs Doom3 and a bunch of other games pretty darn good as well...)

I went from the mx440 to the 9800 np about a year ago and it made a huge difference in MOHAA. When I sit at my old rig, I can't play the game anymore. Frame rates increased around 300%. I imagine the jump from the NP to the Pro will be even more pronounced.

You can run an older game like Half Life (or CS) with 16x AF and 8x AA with no problem whatsoever... that makes the aging engine a little more bearable...

You might want to consider - how many people will play the original CS after HL2 comes out? Probably only people with extremely low end computers since everyone who CAN play CS: Source, WILL. You should be good for HL2 with a 9800 Pro, however.

If a 9600Pro can play Doom 3 fine, a 9800Pro will run HL2 very well. Maybe not all of the eyecandy cranked, but enough so that is will look sweet.
