Howdy all,

Debating between a 6950 (or 6870) today, or a TI560. Does anyone here use the PhysX hybrid with their ATi card and a GeForce card?

Wondering if it works well. If I go the ATi route I'll be using a GeForce GTX 280 for PhysX.

Thanks :D

I used the GenL physx mod for a Batman AA play through using an 8800GT for physx and a 5870 for eyefinity. After that I pulled the card out as it really isn't worth having around based on power consumption and the fact that very, very few games use gpu physx. I didn't have any serious issues getting it to work though.

This +1

I've used an old GTX 240 I have with my 5870. I may pull it out of storage again when batman AC goes into the bargin bin, [/sarcasm] since apparently my i7 is not enough for physx... [/endsarcsm]

I've been considering on doing a hybrid Nvidia and ATI setup but not for PhysX, but hardware accelerated video decoding and encoding.

Support for both seems to be better on Nvidia than ATI. For example, I use LAV media decoders and splitter for Media Player Classic HomeCinema (MPC-HC). It has built-in hardware acceleration support for Nvidia, but not ATI/AMD cards. MadVR video renderer, which I use alongside LAV and MPC-HC, has DXVA decoding support for both cards. But, I wouldn't be surprised that hardware video decoding of 10-bit video will come to Nvidia first before ATI for some reason. I already hate the fact that PhysX is locked out to AMD users, and have to resort to running it on a CPU-- in x87 no less if I recall unless that's been changed. I'm getting tired with the "The Way It's Meant to be Played" and how it seems those games get "gimped" on AMD cards seemingly ON PURPOSE. I've been using ATI/AMD cards for years, don't think I'd ever switch over to Nvidia.

With that out of the way...

The thing with this chart, it doesn't take into account which version of CUDA is supported. The newest cards obviously use the latest version of CUDA-- 2.1.

I have a 600W PSU with a Radeon 6950. I'm thinking I'd have to upgrade the PSU first if I go with something like a 550 Ti or GTS 450. But, will consider this on my next upgrade in a couple months when IVB is out. Will I need a 650W or 700W if I go with a GTS 450 or 550 Ti?

I got physX working, supposedly, with a 285. It would show up checked in gpuZ, but did not seem to help my 3dMarks.

Further I never could get the card to fold with AMD cards also in the rig, I never had a game to test.

Who cares about 3D Marks, go try Batman AA and you will know right away if its working or not. My 9800GT and ATI 6870 worked great in that game. Difference was huge with physx on. Not going to happen anymore, though, I got a crossfire rig now with two 6870's. Just got it put together it but seems to be working fine.

Hmmm, I've got an old 9600GT lying around, think it would be worth pairing it with my 5870? I play a shit ton of Batman AA and AC. Think it would be worth it or would a 9600GT be too slow for a 5870?

I had a 9600GT SLI setup, then a 5870+gtx 240 in the original Batman AA and they worked great. For Physx you should get something worthwhile out of 1 real 9600GT (not GSO or cut other down versions nvidia swindled people with), don't expect all the bells & whistles, but probably at least medium.

so i guess thats the big questtion: if a 9600GT is "sufficient" what is the minimum level needs for "all the bells and wihstles"

ie cheapest solution with the best results.

it was stated above the 9800GT is just sufficient, not all the bells and wistles..

the 240 sound about right, i figured 260....but 240 would be cheaper and less power certainly..

Arkham City recommends a dedicated GTX 460 for high physx. I find that the game is playable with high physx on a 9800GT, hence my recommendation. Do with it what you like.

I have a Radeon HD 6970 coupled with a PNY GT 240 GDDR5 card and works like a champ for Batman Arkham City with PhysX on the highest, I had only two considerable slowdowns with PhysX which is when Penguin is shooting you with Mr. Freeze's ice gun and doesn't dip below 24fps and the part that you have to beat the Joker with lots of guys in there (I think it was more of a bug than anything else). The GPU usage of PhysX on the GT 240 is between 5% and 75% with an average of 38%. I use the nVidia's 280 WHQL driver, with PhysX 9.11.0621 with latest GenL patch, you can upgrade your PhysX runtime to the latest but don't upgrade to the nVidia's latest driver as it will break GenLacceleration patch on Batman AC.
