ATi performance issues

My friend just installed a Radeon 9800 in his P4 3.0/800 FSB desktop. It runs games pretty disapointingly. Its getting 100 FPS in Q3 at 1600x1200 where my desktop (9800 Pro, Athlon XP 2000+) gets 184. This is after a driver reinstall, too.. it was getting 79.9-80.1 consistantly before. His 3DMark score was pretty crappy as well (around 3000, my desktop got 5600).

My laptop seems to be having the same issue. It is the M6805 with an Athlon 64 3000+ and a Radeon 9600. I installed the latest ATi drivers on it with some INF tricks and ramped the core clock up to 398 MHz (from 297) and the memory to 250 (from 200), which gave me a 25% graphics boost accross the board, but I'm having the same issue. Q3 puts out 103 FPS at 1600x1200 and 3DMark got 3050. The CPU score was stomping on my desktop, but the graphics score seems way too low, and I know for sure it is on my friend's desktop.

Any suggestions?

edit: Both are running on the Car 4.3s, and yes, VSync is off. Also, turning on FSAA does lower the performance even further on both machines.

Actually, there's your (and his) problem - neither of you is using the exact same resolution settings in testing. That 100FPS in Q3 and that ~3000 score in 3DMark03 are about what you should be getting at 1600x1200 anyway. Your 5600 score and 184FPS Q3 result are at a lower, 1024x768 resolution. Thus, you should only compare 3DMark scores and gaming performance at equal resolutions.

Friends desktop: Scores ARE low. What did he have installed before the Radeon? Nvidia? Get all the drivers off?

Your Laptop: I've got the M6805. Those scores are about right for it, at 1600x1200. It's only a 9600. 4 pipes... even the uber clocked 9600s can't keep up with the 9700 Pros.

Unit-0: That driver would be installed already on both, or there would have been even larger issues. Especially on the M6805, since the Hyperion drivers haven't been updated in a bit.

I have the 9600 in the M6805 running at 450 MHz core.. that's pretty high (stock was like 290-something), and the card in my friend's desktop is clocked to match my desktop. Both cards are showing similar areas of performance weakness (fillrates on both are about half expected, pixel shaders run about half expected speeds), yet triangle rates seem ok. Its very fucked up.

And yes, he has chipset drivers installed and previously his box had an 8500 in it.

You do realize that you would have to have a 900mhz 9600 (or so) to keep up with the 8 pipes of a 9800, right? You're not comparing to him, right?

I'm getting about that on my 6805, so

Install the Cat4.3 drivers (making sure to remove the old 4.2 driver) and leave all your D3D and OpenGL setting at either default or App Pref and it should work just fine. My 9600XT blazes on HALO, CS, and even the FarCry demo. Friend of mine told me that the 4.3driver was supposed to increase DX9 preformance so only change the video setting for gams and stuff insid the game and leave all you other stuff at default of app pref making sure that Refresh Rate Override is diabled and that Vsync is off and eveything should be a OK.
