ATI Overdrive Question

Alright i have a big question - I am using my Sapphire ATI Radeon X1800XT, flashed to the OC bios just an hour ago. I also just upgraded to catalyst 6.1.

With stock cooling and no extra fan, i hit 702 Mhz on the core, and overdrive's automated clock configurator said thats it, done. I had hit ~72C.

Now, i have a 120 mm fan blowing accross the card, the temperature has been much cooler overall, and overdrive is still going at 994 mhz core NO JOKE!!! are my eyes deceiving me? is this actually still seeing stability at this speed, and thus climbing? and why isnt my temp really getting any higher. I have been taking periodic screeshots, and started saving them as well ( TIFF format ) (w00t) still going at 1000mhz core.

somebody, am i actually hitting these speeds stably? or is overdrive just being silly.

who knows, catalyst has lied to me so many times, and is usually unstable, which is why im an n-vidia guy.

and you probibly know this but, on most cards theres 2 core speeds, one for 2d (direct draw(just milling around in windows)) and one for direct 3d(games) so your tuner is probibly changing the core speed of your direct 3d, and you'll only really know if it works if you run a game, which at 2x the origonal card speed, would normally require liquid cooling.

try running a few of the 3d mark tests, dont run all of them, see how it performs.

but yea, 2 settings, make sure your running the right one.

i am fully aware that at the desktop and in 2d apps it runs at the underclocked speeds. i stopped it at 1075mhz, not because anything was getting flakey or unstable either. i'm running 3dmark05 now, at all the defaults, and just to see, i set the core to 998 and mem to 800. scores should be back after this one last cpu test.

i honestly don't know what to make of this. furthermore i should note that the temperature doesnt seem to rise linearly to the shown core clock as it increases. also, 3dmark05 doesnt seem to be running too much faster with 998 core. i don't know if this is showing memory limitation of the gpu, or if on the back end of things the clocks just stopped increasing despite what software reports. i haven't gotten any artifacting at all.

and here's a result - 9938 3dmarks. down by 12 from what i had at 702 core. i just don't understand what i'm seeing yet...

donno man, somethings messed up for sure, cuz air cooling at more then 2x the speed? not possible, if i were you, i wouldnt push it that hard.

its just blazing through these 3dmark tests, but even still its no faster framewise as it is at any other time. i think this has got to be hardware limited just bumped to like 1138 and nothing has changed in the tests. in fact 9853 the score got lower lol.

well, its getting late, maybe tomorrow i will revert to catalyst 5.13 and see if there's any difference. thanks for the replies MrWizard6600

edit: yeah i can pretty much safely say: Catalyst 6.1 - ATI Overdrive is not working on my X1800XT with the oc bios. although i'm sure i'm at the OC speeds from the bios itself, i ain't getting anything past that. lol though for some reason, overdrive does cook the gpu's goose up real nicely.

Rook, Use ATI TOOL to OC your card, it allows you to make more adjustments, such as Fan speed control and better Temp monitoring and it's much better than OverDrive.

It's very possible that you are hitting 1000MHz on that card, I have seen a few people do it. But I would DL ATI Tool and make sure your temps are safe before you try to push it any harder.

I dont think anyone has been able to hit 1000 mhz Core 3d Stable. The most I seen was Macci and Sampsa getting into windows with it at 1000 mhz on DI or something like that. I would like to see anyone else doing this.

I think it is lying to you. I second the ATI Tool suggestion.

Come to think of it, I don't think the 2 people I saw hit 1000MHz were running a Stock air cooler. Eva and Plywood.

yeah as stated a few posts above, i don't think cat 6.1is telling me the truth. i brought it up insanely high, and the temps didnt even rise. so the hardware must have just stayed the same after a certain point, despite the software.

regarding ATI tool, last time i tried it, when i got this card, it did me little good except F up my display. i'd give it another go, but i hate having to keep restarting when it goes bad, adjusting the voltage etc. on that note, can anyone tell me approximately what voltages i should be using at various clocks? or am i just going to have to figure it out?

It is a glitch in the Overdrive. It does not recognize the overclock bios properly. Do not use the Overdrive feature to clock your card...
