I'm getting a new computer tomorrow, and I'm wondering:

for gaming, would it be better to have an nVidia or ATI card?

Personal preference. You pick.

nVidia 6800 (PS 3.0)
ATi X800 (PS 2.0)

how deep are ya pockets :)?

300 bucks 6800nu

400 bucks 6800 gt

500 bucks its a toss up but 6800 ultra has more features and future usages.

they're both equal. admit it. the largest difference i see is that one draws more power than the other.

buuuut best bang for the buck i'd say (and so is pretty much everyone else) is the 6800gt.

Sorry, I should have been a little bit more clear.

I can only spend $200 on the card.

I'm not worried at all about power, because a 480W PSU in a $900 system is more than enough.

For $200 I think most would agree that the ATI Radeon 9800 pro is best.
yea even though I like nvidia if thats your price range get that card.

9800 Pro, without a doubt.

If you have a previous Ati card. Do the Ati trade in deal they have. I think you can get a 9800 Pro 256 for close to $200, and then you could bios flash it to 9800 XT.

Or you can wait for the 6800 LE.
It should start to show up in the next month or two, I'd wait to get that or get a 9800 Pro right now.

So a 9800 Pro is the way I should go then?

The only other computer I have has an nVidia GeForce4, and I'm fairly happy with it. It runs UT2K4 at 1280x1024 resolution with all the settings maxed out great, and that's about all I could want...

Although, Doom 3 is coming out, that will require some more power...
