Happy holidays to all and a a happy new year. I just got a 9800pro as a x-mas gift. I was mostly an Nvidia person so i know diddly-squat about ati. My question is what is the difference between the package with Catalyst and without Catalyst?
What is Catalyst and what does it do?

Catalyst are your ATI drivers. Just get the basic version without the Catalyst Control Pannel as its buggy and useless. You'll want to set the custom settings to force quality rather than automatic.

Here we go again with your ignorance. Its your OPINION its buggy and useless. Lots of people like it, and dont have any problems.

jsut get the one that dont have the catalyst COntrol panel.. i had that thing for 5 seconds and i laughed . uninstalled that fast... and it was a ****** ram hog.. nice going ati

It also forces optimizations and their socalled A.I. is garbage. Its night and day in image quality with optimizations off and on.

Maybe your eyesight is bad or your monitor sucks fallguy. There is a difference in IQ, and the CCP is useless because its got no features expcept the bogus optimizations and its a RAM hog that requires .NET to be installed. How many times have you heard people say "CCP is perfect, improves image quality, and makes my windows load faster". Never because it does the opposite of all those things.

You were proven wrong in the last thread (saying you had to have the CCC, when you dont), dont start debate. I wont derail this topic farther than it is. [H]'s article proves it can be useful. Ill just leave it at that.

you are so retarded, it is unbelieveable.
Seriously, could you possibly NOT crap on any ati threads?
Everything you say is either an opinion or wrong.
Here's some facts:
Both ati and nvidia force optimizations by default, just that nvidia gives you the option to turn off their AF and filterting trickery.
Ati said they'd give you the option to do that IF people asked for it, obviously not enough people have "good" eyesight like you, since they haven't added the ability to turn it off.
What you can do, however, is turn off app specific opts, and filtering ops, just you're not able to turn on true trilinear.
CCP is the future, and in it's infancy, what makes you think nvidia won't adopt a similar system?
It's all about .net dude..
Seriously mods- atleast warn this guy about crapping on every ati thread

Is CCC that bad? I guess that I should just stick with the drivers for the 9800pro and leave it at that unless someone can explain to me how it can make the games faster wiothout being a memory-hog.

Just download the Cat 4.12s without the CCC and you should be fine. It is not required.

CCC is bad, no debate required, you'll be better off without it, you can try it if you want to though.

your CCC experience is relative

some people dislike it

some people like it

the only way you will truely know is to download it and try it yourself, use it, and see if its something you want to use

there are advantages to using it, for one being able to have app detection and optimizations, and being able to disable them if you wish

you can always uninstall it if you don't like it and go back to the legacy control panel

and as for the memory hog part, it only eats up memory when it is running, once you exit it it should release the RAM

the future is Longhorn, and Longhorn is .NET, the future of drivers and control panels is .NET for Longhorn, so get used to it, hopefully they will improve over time, I'm glad ATI is getting a jump start on it now, by the time Longhorn comes along hopefully it will be polished up very nicely

It's amazing how much you DON'T know yet you feel like typing away. You really need to stop replying because you're sounding more and more like a driver idiot. There is no NIGHT and day image quality change. Learn a little more before you start typing away and making yourself look like a fool.

Clockworks: I recommend trying both versions. The "memory hog" issue is released the moment another program needs the memory. It is not running all the time. And two: A lot of that happens when some people leave control panel open the whole time. Since you used to have a nvidia card (I'm assuming) make sure you use drivercleaner erasing your old info.

Stop whining and trying to pump up an app that tons of people don't like. I'm not crapping on anything, I'm sharing my experience with the program. They should release it as a BETA if its in its infancy so stop pretending like its such a great thing.

Do the test for yourself. Force all optimizations on, turn AI to the highest settings its got[(automatically sets everything to performance > quality)check my sig to see the specs of the machine it forces those settings on] in the CCP and then take screen captures in BMP or TIFF format. Check the uncompressed images and you'll be able to see what I mean.

As others have said, download and install the 4.12's...Remember to use driver cleaner to get rid of your old drivers... As for CCC, download and install it or don't.. You can uninstall it if you don't like it.. I personaly don't care for it and uninstalled it rather quickly myself.. my $.02

Ton of people like it too. Where's your survey? How's it BETA? The only thing beta really is net1.1 and net2.0 was supposed to be out earlier but it never came. You have problems? Put net2.0 BETA on and see if CCC works for you better than.

Holy crap. The world has already done massive comparisons between the two on every site that reviews videocards. There is no night and day quality changes. I've done it my self. And if you have to actually stop..take a screen capture and compare, then it ISN'T a night and day comparison is now! And yes I've done the comparison. Why don't YOU post pictures of YOUR problems of so called crappy image quality or sit down. And I've set my AI to highest settings and....NOTHING else moved (performance > quality) YOU need to check your system because it sounds like IT is buggy as shit and needs some cleaning/reinstalling.

I think we've proven our point boss.
You are of the minority, please move on, before you embarrass your self even more with your ignorance.

Seems like its about half and half who like it/have problems with it. My system is not "buggy as shit", as you so ignorantly assumed, and runs smoothly without a hitch with the CCC uninstalled. I'm not on the system with the ATI card at the moment, but I'll go ahead and post pics of the difference later on today for your viewing pleasure ;) I'm not ruining anything for anyone. Advising someone to stay away from a useless thing that lots of people seem to have problems with in otherwise stable systems isn't ruination, its advice; take it or leave it.

Well here's some advice for people offering advice: Use objective terms, leave out "garbage", "crappy", "sucks" and other negatively biased words. This will reduce the amount of negative response and keep the thread on-topic.
