should i buy the x800pro and go with my long time friend ati or take hte plunge at nvidia with the 6800gt, i know the diffs in pipes and the sm 3.0 deal
 
I say stick with ATI. I play an opengl game but Im staying with them anyways even though nvid is better at opengl. I believe ATI has more solid drivers these days.
 
I dunno about ATI having a better driver just yet. I still find Nvidia drivers to be better all around in 2D mode, I still find a lot of little glitches with the ATI in my laptop when watching DVDs and a few other things. However on the other side I found ATI drivers to have better compatibility with old games.
 
I say go for the 6800GT. It's the much better card for the money, all the tests show it. I owned an ATi X800 Pro AGP recently, which is supposedly the "preffered graphics" for HL2 and it actually sucked in my opinion. Put in the 6800GT, fired HL2 up, and I was seeing much better performance and FPS right away, not even overclocked. I couldn't even think of running Doom 3 or FarCry with it either. NVidia also has a much smaller driver package, not a bunch of extra utilities that you don't need (I know you don't have to install all the tools that Catalyst gives you).

I hope it's not just me, but everyone has been brainwashed that ATi makes better cards. Go to CompUSA, BestBuy, Circuit City, and everyone will tell you that ATi makes the best cards. They look at you crazy when you ask for a 6800GT. I had to ask for the 6800GT when I went to look at it at BestBuy, and it took 4 employees before anyone knew what it was, and he had to look on the computer at that. They also only had 2 in stock, but they had a bunch of X800 Pro's. As the guy was helping me I was like "Yeah, my X800 Pro just isn't pulling the graphics I want it to", and he's like "Really, it isn't?!" as if I were lying or something. I just don't get the whole thing...
 
Put names in a hat and draw. The most important factor... You won't be disappointed with either..
 
I'd say that if you're looking at the plain jane x800 pro vs the 6800 GT, go with the 6800. Or else you could get an x800 pro VIVO like I did. But you should be perfectly happy with a 6800 GT.

Between an X800Pro and 6800GT, the 6800 is the better card.
Unless you get ahold of a VIVO Pro, they can be flahsed into XT's. But then again, GT's can be flahsed to ultra. Maybe even Ultra Extreme.
 
The 6800GT will be a safer bet. You can turn it into an ultra by just overclocking or you could try flashing the BIOS. With the x800 Pro, you first need to find a VIVO and then your chances of turning it into a XT or XT PE are still not that great. They are both great cards and I use a x800 Pro in my shuttle LAN box, but that's mostly because I already had it and it draws less power, it's small, and produces less heat. For a regular desktop PC, the 6800GT still seems to be better than the x800 Pro.
 
thx guys i found a 6800gt for 348 im kinda pullin for it, at the same time i like the idea of turning it into an ultra
thats probably the safer bet but im not one to play games at high high quality all the time since my focus is mainly on competitive multiplayer, currently doom3, so i run settings like this, meduim/high , competitive gamers res (8*6), and with like 2x aa, and sometimes even none, if none then it will be on high quality. so am i prehaps buying too mcuh, cause i know i can pull that off with a 6600gt, but then again that will kill the whole extreme gaming rig thing

no you weren't

unless you can tell the difference between 85 and 90 fps........something you can't, I might add.

and the x800pro is better in farcry.......
 
$348 is a good price for a 6800GT. I assume it's the 128mb version for that price?

I understand that you cannot see a difference between 85-90 fps, and I'm not saying I saw that difference, but I DID see a little overall improvement when I got the new card.

Maybe it was my ATi drivers or something, because I hadn't updated them, maybe it was a defective card, but I did see improvement when I installed the 6800GT and put brand new drivers in...
 
It's hard to go wrong with either card. The only reason I returned my 6800GT and got an X800 instead was that the 6800GT had some weird IRQ conflict with my TV tuner card. Of course I'm very glad that I was able to get an X800 Pro VIVO and was able to mod it to an XT PE, but the 6800GT was plenty fast for me as long as I didn't watch TV.
 
well after this all it just seems the 6800 gt is a superior card all around but i want a x800 more. this will be my last card for atelast a year and a half so ne more info is appreciated. i might also want to mention that i play doom3 all the time
 
i cant resist natures call, im gonna go for a x800pro. now should iget the sapphire with the original mascot or one with the alien, which u guys like better? and which one flashes best? :confused:
 
Which ever is a VIVO, only VIVO x800pros can mod.

If you are going pci-e it'd be prudent to wait for the x800ls which owns the x800pro for cheaper.

What about X800XL? I'm not sure if there will be an AGP model, but it's a good contender nonetheless.
 
I started with Nvidia then switched to an ATI XT PE. I have no alligeance to either company. I simply go with the best card on the market at the time. The 6800GT outperforms the X800pro in most benchmarks. It's a better deal for the money, period. Now if your talking about a X800pro Vivo or XT its a different story. But if its a tossup between the GT and the Pro, go with the GT and don't look back.
