I have a 5770 and a extra 8600GTS laying around

can I use my 8600GTS as a physx card even though I have a ati card as my main gpu?

Yes, with some work. Nvidia recently added a check to their driver to block PhysX if it detects an ATI card in the system, so you'll need to use GenL's hack on the Nvidia driver. You may also run into little quirks with the two different control panel apps. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1506078

FYI, Vista doesn't allow multiple video drivers, so you must use 7 or XP. XP x64 has major issues with both ATI and Nvidia drivers at the same time (reported since 2007). I spent quite a while trying to get it working on XP x64, but finally gave up and installed my copy of Win7. It was pretty much painless after that.

I assume that's directed at my XP x64 comment. From the third comment on that page:

it wasn’t tested on XP x64.

There are issues just getting the patcher to work, because of how Windows handles x86 and x64 system files. There are separate Windows issues with having both Nvidia and ATI cards installed. I'm not sure if everyone runs into it, but I did. In searching for fixes, I found it being reported three years ago, with no solution. Usually it was in the form of someone switching from one brand to the other, and the only solution was to completely clean out the old drivers. Obviously that's not an option for running both cards simultaneously. It may depend on specific cards or driver versions or something else. I messed around with it for hours and got nowhere. I backed up my drive and installed Win7, and both cards worked after a few clicks.

Vista allows multiple drivers as long as the driver is WDDM and not XP driver model.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Display_Driver_Model#Limitations
One of the limitations of WDDM driver model version 1.0 is that it does not support multiple drivers in a multi-adapter, multi-monitor setup. If a multi-monitor system has more than one graphics adapter powering the monitors, both the adaptors must use the same WDDM driver. If more than one driver is used, Windows will disable one of them. WDDM 1.1 does not have this limitation.

WDDM 1.1, Direct3D 11, Direct2D and DirectWrite will also be available with Windows Vista Platform Update

Looks like that was released in October, so it should be able to now on an updated Vista. It didn't work on Vista previously though.

I just got this setup working on my rig. 4890 is my main gpu with an 8800gts for physx. Used the Hybrid physx mod 1.03, 197.45 nividia drivers and 10.3 catalyst. You have to create a fake vga display on the nvidia card. The FAQ for the hybrid physx mod says do not extend the display for win7, but it would not allow hardware physx settings in Dark Void this way, I had to set it to extend the desktop for it to work properly.
