Should I have this on or off for best performance?



I did a forums search for it, and I didn't turn up much more then people having problem with cards and trying to trouble shoot.


Nothing specificly about Fastwrits in general being left on or off?
 
I've tried it both ways on my 9700 Pro and couldn't see any performance difference but I've heard that 9600XTs (at least I think it was 9600XTs) slow down somewhat if you turn them off. For almost all cards, I don't think it makes a difference unless your trying to gain a few benchmark points.

They do make transfers from the CPU to the GPU faster, but that just doesn't seem to make much of a dent in the actual game performance. Almost all of the game performance is accessing the local video RAM or loading operands from the motherboard RAM and fast writes don't change any of that.

After reading the AGP spec, I think that people who have problems with fast writes are really having problems with running at too high of an AGP speed mulitiplier. The bulk of the fast write data is transferred at the full AGP speed, so if that's flakey, the fast write cracks up. If you AGP speed multiplier is set correctly, you shouldn't have to disable fast writes.
