ATI driver & Minecraft problem

I have been having problems with my ATI Radeon 4850 not playing well with Minecraft. It causes the game to pause and error (I don't know the error as it didn't show me, it just wanted to send a report), pause again and again and then freeze the entire computer up forcing me to reboot.
I uninstalled the old drivers and installed the 12-8_xp32_dd_ccc drivers. This did not help at all, in fact it was like I hadn't done a thing. I then uninstalled it and installed the 12-6-Legacy_xp32_dd_ccc_whql drivers. This caused me to get the error that I was missing the wbhelp2.dll and that it couldn't finish skinning the catalyst control center. The error is: c:\Program Files\ATI\ATI.ace\core-implementation\32\wbhelp2.dll

The thing is; there is NO core-implementation in the ati.ace! There is a core-static, but no implementation.

What the heck can I do to get this to work together?? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers over and over again. I am running Windows XP.

Anyone able to help at all?

I have removed all drivers and what program was left after the uninstall. I have tried just uninstalling it. Each time I tried, I rebooted the computer (I wish I had a solid state drive now so this thing would boot faster!!!)

Anyone? Help please?

You might want to try updating Java, maybe check to see if Service Packs are installed n such? Also, if that does not work, try another video card if you have one laying around.
