ATI Delivers GPU-Accelerated Video Transcoding

AFAIK Purevideo is basically a decoder which uses hardware to accelerate decoding making it less strenuous in the cpu. This is showing ati cards can use this AVIVO function to convert files from one format t another very quickly

How do you even get purevideo to work? I have a 6800gt and I have never seen any preformance in video decoding.

From what I understand purevideo is completely programmable and can do all kinds encoding and decoding. The drawback to this is that it probably wont be as fast as a full hardware solution. The advantage is it as extremely versatile.

You need some additional software for that.
For DVDs, you need to buy nvidia's Purevideo Decoder.
For WMV9 video acceleration, you need to get some patch from Microsoft. (Note, this won't work if you have a AGP 6800GT).

Purevideo is a hardware solution. There are in fact transistors that aid in decode and encode on NV40 and G70. It just needs software and drivers to utilize it. No idea what kind of perf while aiding encoding.

These numbers on the X1800 XT are impressive, but it wasn't doing sound. Can't wait to see what the final program looks like and the final performance.

True it doesn't do sound, but sound is easy for the CPU to do anyway. Is there any way to make a SB Audigy 2 and up do the sound?

The problem is it doesn't encode the audio. In fact it skips the audio altogether (as the second page states). Would you watch a DVD Rip with no audio?

You can always demux the audio, and then multiplex the audio track back into the media when the video is transcoded.

Both operations take very little time.

I guess if you knew what you were doing with the audio tracks it would be a big plus to have the encoding video take such little time. :)

Purevideo advertised encoding when the 6800 Ultra was launched last year but I gave up on nVidia ever getting hardware encoding to work, when they had tons of problems even getting hardware decoding to work. And to this day the NV30 AGPs can't even do H.264 decoding due to a hardware bug. I don't even bother with purevideo with my 7800, first you've got to pay for it, and it does little more than MPEG-2 decoding, which CPUs have pretty much no problems with. Maybe this will give nVidia some incentive to try to make good on the original promises of purevideo, but given it's rocky past, I prefer to keep my expectations low.

Props to ATi though, a part of me thought they would never actually deliver on hardware encoding like nVidia.

seems like its just using shader code to do encoding not a hard thing to do i could see NV adding this on later at some point

BINGO! Lets wait and see when the final product is delivered.
