I just recently build a new machine a couple days ago. Specs below...

Antec NeoPower 480
Asus A8V Deluxe
A64 3200+ Winnie
9800 Pro 256MB
1GB of Crucial PC-3200 (Memtested for 36 Hours = 0 Errors)
XP-90 w/ Panaflo
1 80GB Sata HDD
1x DVD burner

I've left everything at stock speed, nothing has been overclocked. I just uninstalled the old 4.12 ATi drivers\ and installed the latest 5.1 cataylst driver. My problem still remains.

OK so this is what is happening.

I start up HL2 and it'll get to the main menu, everything seems to be fine, and then all of a sudden it'll either freeze or the monitor goes completely black. However the computer is still running and doesn't reboot. It does this only when I load HL2, general desktop apps run fine. Any suggestions?

Well chances are its a video issue as with most of the games running the Source Engine. HL2 can run very slow if at all the first few times you load it, it does this with everyone(even though im not sure why). Lower the video settings in cs:s or another source game then try re-loading HL2, that may fix it. If not, just simply try re-installing the game, that usually works for me :)

Try different drivers, newer isn't always better. Look at SP2 for Win XP.

Well I think I may have fixed the problem, I turned my AGP acceleration from 8X to 4X and the problem seems to have gone away. While I find this "downgrading" unacceptable. It may be a solution to those with video problems. However we can only hope that Asus will come out with a stable BIOS. Because the card should be able to run in 8X just fine

The difference between 8X and 4X is usually only a few fps, nothing you are going to notice.
