Ati 9000

Newegg is right. Radeon 9000's are RV250s and they are AGP 2.0 only. Check this page for AGP compatibility issues. Radeon 9000s will work in any AGP slot. I think ATI's site is just trying to say it's compatible with 8X motherboards.

Theoretically, yes. But some of the older 440BX mobos may not deliver sufficient current through the AGP slot, resulting in stability issues or a burned-out AGP slot.

As for the Radeon 9000 itself, its maximum bus speed is AGP4x. And the reason why ATi has claimed compatibility with 8x AGP slots is that there is absolutely no motherboard at all whatsoever which has an 0.8V-only AGP slot; in other words, every single 8X AGP slot on motherboards supports both 0.8V and 1.5V signaling. Thus, the R9000 on those 8X AGP slots will work at 1.5V and up to AGP4x.
 
So I should maybe tell him to put in a radeon 7500 then. He is really stuck on getting a radeon.
He is currently using a Nvidia Vanta TNT-2 8MB AGP card.

The motherboard is a Jabil BX Motherboard R2 (Part#4000585)(Gateway) if I remember right. Offhand does any one know which boards had these problems ?
 
That Jabil R2 motherboard was OEM'd by Intel for Gateway. However, judging by the "R2" revision, it may be a later-revision 440BX motherboard. It may be able to handle a 9000.
 
I tried to search through gateways site for any known issues regarding this, but could not find any. I also tried intel's site as well and could not find any mention of this. I hope it can take the upgrade. If any one has any experience with this it would your input would be greatly appreciated.

I hate trying to upgrade old hardware :)
