Is the 5870 the same size and as wide as a GTX 260? Any comparison pics(side by side?)

No. The 5870 is 11 inches long. Be prepared with a spacious/deep case if you want to accomodate one. All PCIE cards are basically the same width though or at least the bracket size will be the same standard size.

Its actually 10.5" long, which is the same length as the GTX 260 and 280.

If you cut off the edge of the shroud it might be 10.5. But with the reference cooler, you'll need 11 inches of space to make it fit.

It's also the same length as a 4870X2 for FYI.

I'm just going off of reviews that measure it at 10.5"

The card measures 10.5” long, an inch longer than the 4890 or the same as the 4870x2 and the NVIDIA GTX lineup.

Then again, now that I look around it seems measurements vary from 10.5" to 11.1" *shrug*

You'll need at least 11" of room. Any less, and it won't fit, or it'll be very difficult to position into place.
