how well would a radeon 3850 512mb perform in steam games like counter-strike source paired with an x2 4200+ and 1 gig of ram?
 
i play on 19" @ 1280x1024 ... i am 100% that even the 256MB would do fine .. but i rather get 512mb for if i want to upgrade to like a 24inch later on


so you think it will run counter-strike source at everything maxed out sweet sweet? without a hickup ?

I hope it will atleast better than my current geforce 6800
 
I will test it out for you when I get The Orange Box next week. I have a 19" 1440x900 monitor as well as my 42" 1080p LCD HDTV.

i try to search on google to see how well it is in counterstrike source,but no success at any article
 
Usually if a game, or game engine, is excluded from a review, it's because the card blows it out of the water anyway. The source engine is very optimized and runs great on tons of cards.
 
nevermind.. ofcourse 512.. the difference is only 20$ at the egg
 
I tried "Crysis" with a single HD 3850 256Mb and was able to run some things high and most medium with 4x AF. I tried 1440x and it did fine. Set texture, object, water and shader on high, the rest on medium. It should handle 1280x or 1440x fine.

Some games it can handle 1680x fine. I was able to run "The Witcher" at that res with 16xAF and all on high. I was testing it under Vista x64 with 4Gb system ram.

The HD 3850s are voltage limited so you won't see over 770 on the core unless you vmod it. This fellow did and got 972 on the core-

Most of these cards will run 760 on the core fine. Overdrive will limit you to 730 so use Rivatuner if you wish to go higher.

IMO it's a great 1280x or 1440x card in most cases, and as I say with some games it will even do 1680x.

If you want to be "safe" and like to use 4x AA or greater you'd do well with the 512Mb variety.

I built my third computer as an AMD incarnation. It has HD 3850 Crossfire as placeholders for HD 3870 X2s.
 
wow and you have the 3850 256mb not even 512mb

so 256mb should be fine for my 1280x1024
 
Consider that my 1950pro was enough to max out source games at that res.

Then ask yourself, why am I willing to buy a $200 graphics card and not install an additional 1GB of memory?

Seriously, buy some more memory.

P.S... Just got my 3850 512mb and it's phenomenal. Running it at 750 core, 950 memory with a little extra head room.
 
I dont know man... I thought about it but since im on socket 939 . i thought like hmm,the memory will go to a waste...at least i could re-use the vidcard in a new build...

what would you suggest?
both the 3850 and another gig of ram?

but definately the 512MB version of the 3850 ?

It's not that it's optimized, but it's an old engine, so new cards will handle it quite well.

To the OP:

A HD 3850 will be able to max every game that use the Source Engine.

Yes, definitely grab at least another GB of RAM. System RAM is one of those things that the more the merrier.
 
1gb is good enough, don't spend more on DDR because it is expensive and probably you won't use it long. Get the 512MB HD3850, you will have a good card that can still be use in your next build.
 
if i want 2 gigs of ram, i need to pick up a kit , 2x1 gig ... i cant pickup some 1 gig now since i have the dfi lanparty and those are very very veryyyy picky on ram and can be very stubborn with diff ram
 
I'd bet anything over 300W will handle an HD3850 fine. My sig.rig is on a 500W SmartPower 2.0.
