ATI 2400PRO advice

Ok, I am trying to keep my new PC upgrade cheap as possible. It's about 3 years old. I currently have a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT 256mb card...it's been rock solid and works fine, I just cannot play any of the more recent games at 1280x1024 resolution (I generally don't use AA or AF).

I have been looking at the 2400HD PRO as a replacement (new motherboard is PCIe) and since it runs about 60$ it's a good buy.

My question is this: Will I see a video performance increase?

I already figure jumping from a AMD 64 3000+ to an AMD 64 X2 5000+ will make a huge difference (also DDR non-dual channel to DDR2 will help) on video converting...just needing to know that I'll be able to play more recent games at my current resolution and I can find no comparisons anywhere on these 2 cards.
 
In terms of gaming performance, no. In terms of playback performance, yes. The 9600XT is still a lot faster than the 2400pro for gaming. But I could be wrong...
 
I think even with the 64bit memory it could be faster, if its 128 then yes, it wll be faster

and its going to be alot better at video rendering and ripping
 
I know that I cannot play HL2 on my current rigat 1280x1024 in the lowest settings...it's choppy in many spots.

Infernal is playing fine in 1024x768 (with medium settings) but if I increase to 1280x1024 it chokes.

I am trying to find some real-world numbers to stick to...either the Radeon 9600 XT in recent games or the 2400HD in older games.

I figured in 3 years...it should have changed enough that the 2400HD should beat the 9600XT. (I know the 2600HD would...just figured I could shave a little off my total package to get the wife to agree to letting me buy it all)
 
I thought the same as you, I thought that today's mainstream cards would be as strong or stronger than a GeForce 6800. But nope. At least for ATI...
 
a Geforce 6800 would probably stomp a 9600xt though...so that's not a real comparison I can use.

The HD2400 is not exactly a mainstream card. And also the main stream hasn't seen hardly any performance increases since the 6600GT.
 
The 2400 is the lowest-end they make. You honestly believe you can get a decent gaming experience from a card that's 50 bucks?

So, yes I seriously think so...since my only plan was a slight update of my 9600XT. My original question was...which was better, not "is the 2400HD a gaming card"...

I already know it's not a gaming card...I don't play too many games. But will it play HL2 in 1280x1024 without AA or AF and get good frame rates? That's what I want to know.

Not really. You may get acceptable framerates, but overall you won't get a noticeable performance increase, over a 9600 XT, even without AA or AF. If you don't want to spend too much money, you should be looking at a 8600 GT or HD 2600 XT, for about $100. A HD 2400 is only good for a HTPC, but you get the same features in a HD 2600 XT and similar ones with a 8600 GT anyway, while having a much better gameplay experience.

Thank You, I am hoping on the rest of the system upgrade to make more of a difference. This card was actually free from a supplier. I have everything I need for a whole new system but the motherboard and processor now, and I am aiming at an AMD 64 X2 5000+ (from an AMD 64 3000+).
