I have a ASUS Z8NA-D6 motherboard, its a "regular" dual cpu atx board.

Currently i only have one E5520 cpu installed. And had 3 sticks of 4gb ram.

Today i bought another 3 sticks beacause it was really cheap. So i would get 24gb of ram.
Bios will recognize the added 12gb ram. but it wont use it.

Asus is not very helpfull and google dident tell me much. is the 5500 chipset setup that way that the cpu handels memorey stuff so i have to get a second cpu to be able to use the ram?

Eventually ofcourse i will get another cpu. But the money is not really avaliable at the time since i want to get 2x E5620 instead.

I could have sworn that the dual QPI in the Xeon required you have two cpus to use all slots. I'd be curious about what would happen if you installed 3 sticks in the slots that are close to the empty socket.

You wouldn't be mixing ecc and non-ecc memory by any chance would you? Also, as mentioned above, you may need both processors to use all 6 sockets. I'd have to dig our my user manual to double check though.
