Asus PhysX P1

There is actually a Physics Processors section on the forum, but in a nutshell, it supposedly accelerates physics in games if the game takes advantage of it.

From what I've read it increases the amount of debris from explosions, and maybe makes it a little prettier, but only in games that use it. It also slows some of those games down, so it's kind of a wash at this point. I'd spend my $200 on something else before I'd spend it on that. It has potential, but as quickly as technology moves, buying "potential" tends to be a losing proposition.

I'd buy a higher end video card to improve the video or get a second one if I had a motherboard that supported SLI or Crossfire. A higher end sound card, a bigger hard drive, etc. before I'd go there. Look in the PPU section; you can get a better idea of the general capabilities from reading in there. To sum up, general capabilities: not much, not right now, and maybe not ever, we'll see
 
Exactly! This card is there for enhancing games with more Physics then was posiblle before. But for that it needs support for it in the game with PhysX(Novodex Physics API)

It's not for the video card. So FPS can chance due to the Physics enhancement +/-.
Some people are so fixed on FPS or bench it as a Vidcard. Wich is wrong and they mis the point totaly.
The game give the whole System a different but also heavier burden wich influence FPS.
But therefore you get the enhancement.
Being:
More EffectPhysics or better
More Gameplay Physics.



There are a few games out and more to come.

And nV, GPU´s, HAvokFX is strangly the mob's favorite with nothing out.

The most of the few games that are out uses a bit effect Physics. Wich doesn´t add much to the game. t´s Nice. But most people don´t feel the need to spend $200 for it.

As response to Caffeinated point. I also recomment that you first upgrade to get a decent Gamerig. And then even start to decide after everthing is in place to buy a PxCard. As a finishing touch wenn there are more games out where some games use PhysX well.

And or UT2007 Unreal3 to for the better effect Physics. And maybe some gameplay Physics to.
And any other decent PhysX game.
In the summer it could be a better time to buy some.

Also it´s possible by then the prices have droped under $200.

There are a lot PhysX game in Produktion.
 
One game I am looking forward to that has PhysX acceleration is Silverfall. I recently played the demo and it looks like a winner. A second, which is a way off, is Sacred 2. Since I was absolutely addicted to the first and it's expansion, I will of course be buying it and reading about its technology. I don't know specifics on how heavily Sacred 2 will use PhysX, but it is being discussed in the Sacred forum.

Silverfall uses ragdoll effects for kills and particles for destructible items (crates, etc.). I think it's a great looking RPG with thematic elements of technology vs. nature, sort of like Arcanum. The demo is fun, and it is on my must buy list.

With regard to Havok FX, I am certainly not inclined to start a disagreement, but it is untrue to say that nothing is using it.

I looked this up because one game that I played last year uses it: Oblivion. That isn't exactly a minor title, nor are many on that list.

With that said, it's still too early to tell the fate of Ageia's PhysX card, but currently there is nothing conclusive to say how much games benefit from the hardware. The software engine, yes - I've already seen and liked the effects in Silverfall. The hardware, eh, it's hard to say because I don't have a PhysX card. That could be the reason why "the mob", whatever that is, seems to prefer Havok. There are already titles out that use Havok physics, and it's easier to have an opinion on something you've already played.

Silverfall gets released at the beginning of March, and I will definitely be buying it, so I'm sure I'll learn more at that time. Someone with a PhysX card will play it, and can let everyone know if there are enhancements with one. The demo is great. I believe I posted about it in this forum. Once again, we'll see. We need games that use PhysX before anyone can really decide on the usefulness of the hardware.

Impresive list. But they are not FX supporting. How many supporting FX is unkown.
This time around there must be some in produktion.

Does the next oblivibion or current one Patched support the FX addon on Havok.

This is an article dated last year. It names 3 XBOX titles that use Havok Physics. Oblivion is one of them.

Oblivion and bunch of other titles use Havok physics. That is my first experience with a game that uses a physics engine of any sort. F.E.A.R also use Havok physics technology.

It isn't physics hardware accelerated, but to my knowledge there is no hardware that accelerates Havok physics at this time. If you haven't, why do you even care what "the mob" prefers with regard to physics technology? If you aren't even playing any games *with* physics, I can't imagine your reasoning behind concern over what technology is being utilized.
 
Hmmm... Before this thread degenerate into something ugly...

Havok FX is not Havok Physic, period, it's that simple. No titles not a single one is listed as Havok FX on their website and Oblivion to my knowledge uses Havok Physic and not Havok FX...

As far as Ageia physx is concerned it's very hard to see where it begins and ends in a certain game, you have to keep in mind that many titles use ageia physx but not everyone of them uses the full engine, also add to the mix that it was renamed at some point and that it integrates meqon now...

Also it's fun to see that Ageia solution can be added on top of Havok, Auto Assault is a fine example, while it uses Havok Physic engine it also uses Ageia physx solution instead of Havok FX...

Ageia's engine is not hardware only or physic only it's also effects... Just check the xbox360 and PS3 titles that have Ageia's engine and none of those systems sport a physx processor, if anything Ageia is guilty of bad "PR" and description of their product, where does the hardware acceleration start and where does it ends, what part of the actual engine is related to the hardware, some part are obvious, cloth and liquid, but outside those two, it's not that clear.

Whether Ageia or Nvidia or Havok prevail I don't really care I'll buy the next gen when it's available systems don't last forever but one thing is sure ever since Ageia showed CellFactor demos it change the way the industry talk about physics in games.

In the end we're all gonna be winners.
 
I'm utterly amazed at how many people are against Ageia in some way. I'm baffled as to why gamers all over are not excited about technology that can add more realism to video games. If peeps can't bash the company they bash its game support. I'm laughing at this because how many games support DX10? Can anyone name a single game?? And how many people are bashing NVIDIA for releasing this new technology? How many games actually support dual core CPU's or HT technology? My point is its absolutely ridiculous hearing/reading people bashing a new company that is trying to bring something new and exciting to PC gaming. Heck even review sites and there reviewers are saying negative things about it in some form or another. All the excitment has been the last few years is core and memory DDR speeds...

There needs to be positive press, positive talk about new technology. Ageia isn't 3dfx all over again so why treat them like there PPU is the Voodoo4/5? What everyone needs to do is chill out give the software some time to catch up to the technology then bitch if it’s granted.

We have guys laughing at other guys here for buying a PPU--like wtf people, is anyone over the age is 15 here or what?

I'm not against them. I just don't have room :) If physics cards become important, you'll hear me say, for the first time, "7900GTX SLI FTL..." (other PCI slot has X-Fi in it)
 
it did not help much for GRAW, besides until more developers start offering to support it extensively without alienating those without it which I know they wont then I'll support it but its the price right now, developer support is between 0-1 which doesnt really justify the price but if we get a few big name ones then Im in
 
Graw is history. Graw is just the first game from 120+ titles to come.
Graw don't make or break ageia.
It depends if within 2007 there must be at least one killer app under those 120+ games.
More even better. Ageia depends on that.
Or just well done PhysX supporting poulair games a couple.
Let say 5 or more.
Large crop of games are more like whats out now. Well I skip those. I wait for the good ones.
Havok FX would have the same problem it start with a first game where the chance it will be a killer app is small but not imposible.
Maybe 1 out of 10 are using Havok FX to it's potentinal
So just like HavokFX I wait for the good ones. Maybe by then it's 2008.
 
A common API is what is needed. Say all that you want that Havok physics isn't physics or however you want to put it, but in the games I've played with physics, I honestly couldn't point at one and say "That uses X and that one uses Y". The tech is great; we need software fallback, though, so that developers aren't alienating a large segment of game owners.

The problem is that with no common standard, we have one developing GLide over here, one developing in OpenGL over there and a large number of developers waiting to see which way the wind blows.

I'm not against it; I just haven't seen a lot of value in purchasing a $200 piece of hardware that I won't be able to use right away. As I said, I'm looking forward to one title that I have played a demo for that uses PhysX. Is it enough to buy the hardware? I don't know yet, it's not out. Based on the demo, I'd say no.

With that said, if Sacred 2:Fallen Angel performs better with a PhysX card, I'll be the first one in line to get one. I won't know the answer to that until the 1Q 2008, or maybe even later.

If there was a standard API, though, it would be 20X more enticing because I could see immediate benefit from it. As it stands now it's a big unknown.

For those of you insisting that one thing is physics and another thing isn't, then there is another part of the problem; a large number of fairly technical people and gamers can't tell the difference between what looks like physics and what is "actually" physics in your definition. I know I've played some games that claim they have physics and at least one that uses PhysX, but I couldn't tell you which one is "real" physics and which one isn't since apparently some of them are "not" physics.

I'm no Ageia !!!!!!, but as bad as things are going for them right now, it looks to me like they've still got the upper hand...

That may be true, but until one of the two companies starts doing better with it, nothing is going to happen in the gaming world with regards to hardware-accelerated physics.

Hopefully, the (still) upcoming killer apps like UT2007 will give the hardware-accelerated physics market a boost.
