LAPTOP Magazine has an exclusive review of the ASUS Eee PC 701 posted today for your viewing pleasure. Hit the link and find out why they say “Pound for pound, the best value-priced notebook on the planet.”

The Eee PC may be designed to appeal to children and older customers, but it should also tempt anyone looking for a lightweight budget PC that weighs next to nothing and connects to the Internet easily. It's ten times simpler to use than any Windows machine, starts up twice as fast.

I want to see someone install XP on it and tear it down. I wonder what interface the SSD uses.

In for one. It would be cool just to have, especially for airplane travel. My 12'' laptop is small, but something even smaller would be better. It is a perfect size between a UMPC and a 12'' laptop.

I'm curious if you can add a USB Bluetooth adapter to it. It would have been nice if that was built in.

Asus was intending to provide XP drivers so installing it shouldn't be a problem unless it doesn't like USB CD drives.

two more questions after reading the article. Does anyone know which family the celeron it uses it from? The $400 price point is much higher than what was being quoted only a few weeks ago ($250ish), did they miss targets that badly, or is the reviewed model significantly higher speced than the cheaper one?

I been wanting a small laptop, something that I can set next to my easy chair so that I can look things up online as I am watching TV. Often I will be watching TV and see something I would want to look up, but I won't do it right away, but then I forget what it was I wanted to look up. Also you would be nice to have as an personal orginizer. But at that price point I can spend only a little more and get a full functioning Laptop that can run Windows Vista. I think the local Best Buy has one for $469. I think the resolution of the screen also kills it for me as far as web surfing goes, most websites are designed for wider resolutions and I don't want to be scrolling side to side, up and down is normal.

If they do become available for $300 I guess it will become a maybe, even though it comes with most of the software I will need, it would be nice if it was easier to install more programs.

About the only quistion I have left after reading the review is what is the supported resolutions of the VGA port?

I would definitely prefer to use this in class/library and not have to constantly worry about getting my $1500 laptop stolen. I do agree that they should have included a XP install in the review to see how it more comparatively stands up against other laptops.

Isn't windows a bit much for a 4gb HD?

And is anyone else having a problem loading its newegg page? Whenever I try to get near its category the page fails to load...

It's probably some variant of Windows CE or something like that

The page is coming up over here but is currently listed out of stock. :(

I don't see any in-depth specifications for the laptops (or shall I call them handtops? :p). Anyone know if they're putting in PCMCIA slots too? It would suck if I had to use a USB dongle for everything like EDGE or EVDO cards.

right now there isn't a PCMCIA slot......something people think need to be added though.

Err nevermind. I saw the photos of the laptop on all sides in mitcity22's link. Doesn't seem to have PCMCIA slots =(

The lack of USB 2.0 slots are discerning too. I didn't know anyone still use 1.1 anymore :p

notebook review is claiming USB2. Not sure where you saw 1, but almost certain it's a typo.
