Ok I saw an artice on MaxPC about the tv tuners wont be able to record as of July 1st by the FCC..........question then, is this..... ill type the article

HDTV under fire!

If you're like us, you enjoy recording TV shows and ripping them to Divix to watch on your laptop of stream to another PC on your home network. Using today's technology, this is totally legal and fairly easy to do with the right hardware. All that is going to change, though, on July 1, 2005, when the FCC's "broadcas flag for digital video streams and HDTV recorders make it debut.

Broadcast-flag technology uses a signal embedded in the digital television stream that tells the recorder what it can and cannot do with the stream once it's been captured. The flag might dictate that the content can't be copied to another device, it might not permit archiving to DVD, or it could allow free distribution- the latter scenario being the least likely.

If you think this will be a gradual rollout, think again. The FCC has mandated that every TV tunder, HDTV recorder, and digital television stream be broadcast flag-enabled as of July, 1, 2005.

Of course, it's possible vendors will release flag-anabled product ahead of schecule; and it's our understanding that non-enabled product on store shelves prior to the deadline can remain there until sold.

Our advice? Don't mess around- go shopping now, Visit EFF.org for a list of currently available hardware that is not broadcast-flag enabled.




my question is will this effect AIW's as well? i plan on getting one and record certin shows for personal use obviously, but wondering about that......anyone have input or know more about this than that article?

As far as I understand it, it only applies to Hi Def tuner cards, which AIW's don't have. It's a moot point though, because on May 6th, the DC circuit court of appeals threw it out, although it's probably just a delay until the MPAA can buy enough politicians to make it a law, probably punishable by death :)

Ok, didnt know aiw's didnt have HDTV, ok, cause i think im going to get one for no other reason than i have to turn my neck to watch tv from computer :p awesome insight and thanks for posting :) and thats good they threw it out
