ok, here's the deal

i have 3 HDs

1 seagate
2x maxtor HDs

1 primary ide controller
1 secondary ide controller
1 ide controller card

i can't seem to get all 3 working at the same time. i can get 2 but not 3 and the secondary IDE thing is not working at all for the HDs, it works for the DVD burner though.

i can't mess with the maxtor jumpers either because they are stuck really hard. i don't know wtf to do.

anyone able to shed some wisdom because i'm so confused as to how to set up master/slave and whatever combination, if i set it wrong my computer won't even boot, it just sits there.

help please!
 
Put one drive on each channel. Put the DVD burner as slave to one of those drives. It's not the most efficient way, but it should at least work...

What about using a pair of needlenosed pliers to pull the jumpers? They can be hard to remove by hand, but the proper tool usually fixes that...

otherwise tweezers work too. If you don't own a pair ask your GF :)
 
i'm trying to remove it with tweezers, but it's like impossible.

the biggest stumper atm is that before when i had 2x 200s and 1x 80, i never had a problem like this. when i took out the 80 and tossed in a 300, it started doing that.

i think all the jumpers are set to 'cable select' or something atm.

i've tried 1 primary, 1 secondary and it still doesn't work.

the HDs work also, so it's just weird, can someone explain the process of master/slave and efficiency and why it's not working. like it boots up, it does the RAM check and it freezes at the IDE/HD check or something, for the IDE's, or sometimes for the PCI controller card, it works on the IDE/HD check but it finds nothing attached to the IDE, even though there is something attached to it.

is it easier using, SATA? is my motherboard a POS? or is this common?

EDIT: oh yes, btw, is there a big difference between primary/secondary ide controllers?
when my system did work with the 80 and 2x 200's, windows was based off the secondary controller and the other HDs were on the primary, but they were slow often (see my other post) and they were both set to 'cable select too.'

EDIT2: i heard that sometimes HDs from different manufacturer's don't like each other. i have the need to install 4 ide devices, 2x Maxtor, 1x Seagate, and 1x DVD burner.

I generally use the ubiquitous "jeweler's" screwdrivers to take them out, but sometimes forceps are easier to work with in cramped areas, esp. when putting them back.

I don't remember where I bought the (Kelly, curved) forceps, but it was nowhere special -- drugstore, supermarket, or hardware store. I didn't know there were so many different types..

I'd probably focus on the 300 GB drive by itself at this point -- take out the other connections, ensure that the cable, power, and settings are right for the single drive, and take it from there.

You could do a simple substitution at this point -- if it detects another drive with the same settings in the same connection, etc., then it's something specific to that HD, perhaps with your MB.

BTW, there have been known issues with nForce3 and nForce4 MB's not recognizing some Maxtor HD's. The support note's a bit confusing, because it mentions two different issues at the same time. The issue with non-recognition is addressed by a Maxtor drive firmware fix, and extend beyond SATA II drives to SATA I drives at least (according to the drive prefixes listed). It might extend to PATA drives -- some drive prefixes match; however, the note only mentions "SATA II" drives. So this is contradictory -- if the issue only applies to SATA II drives, they shouldn't have listed SATA I and ATA prefixes "6L" for example is not SATA II.

The data corruption issue seems to be specific to SATA II drives, and is fixed by a nVIDIA driver update.

Note in addition that this issue is only for nForce controllers, so you should be able to use your add-on controller with the problematic drive.
