Hello

I'm currently using a RocketRaid 3520.
I want to buy a bigger controller with 4 internal SAS connectors (for 16 internal drives).

I already read some benchmarks of these two controllers:

Areca ARC-1880-ix-16
http://www.areca.com.tw/products/1880.htm

LSI MegaRAID SAS 9280-16i4e
http://www.lsi.com/products/storagecomponents/Pages/MegaRAIDSAS9280-16i4e.aspx

Is the 800MHz RAID on Chip enogh for a RAID5 with 4-5 SSDs and some more RAID5 with "normal" disks?

Here the pros and cons in my eyes:

Areca
PRO:
1GB memory out of the box
Upgrade to 4GB memory possible
NIC for management

CON:
Price

LSI
PRO:
Price
Official SSD support

CON:
512MB memory, no upgrade possible

Controller requirements:
PCIe x4,x8,x16
RAID0/1/5/6/10
XOR engine (no SW RAID card)
SATA-3 (6GBit/s)
3TB per Disk Support
Min. 4 internal SAS connectors
write and read cache must be available without a BBU
Min 512MB memory (1GB would be better)
Very good raid5/6 performance

Nice to have: VMWare 4 support

Thanks for all feedback

I asked myself that same question few months back...
I went with the LSI 9260-16i, quite a bit cheaper, and being that both intel (RS2WG160) and dell (H700) sell them, I figured they weren't shit. Every benchmark I've seen, seems good, and my own results were quite good for a 5 drive array:

Granted talking different cards here, but this was one of the reasons I stayed away from Areca:

I haven't seen any websites comparing the new controllers.
