My question is pretty simple :) at the moment i use a 1882ix-24 connected by 8088 to a HP SAS expander (so connected external to a seperate case). They is a RAID6 and a RAID5 array created combined of disks all connected to the HP SAS expander.

Since the SAS expander is only able to do SATA300 this way the 1882 is a waste of power. I also have got a couple 1680 cards. Plus i have a new goal for the 1882 :)

I know it is possible to upgrade an areca card and keep the array, but is it also possible to keep the RAID arrays while DOWNGRADING from a 1882ix to an 1680 ? Both have got an 8088 external port so physically i don't see a problem :)

Does anyone see any other problems?

It's hit or miss to be honest. Hard to say. You may be limited to SATA2 with your drives, but performance and rebuilt times will still be considerably better on the 1882 than the 1680.
