Applying MX-2 Thermal Paste?

That's the method I use and it works well. Try it out and if that doesn't work, try the line technique used by Arctic Silver. I think coating the entire thing would put way too much on it unless you put a very very thin coat on it.
 
I think that methods where you blob or line it and then put the HSF down are probably superior - you get a thinner coat and less chance of tiny air bubbles. That, and most pictures I've seen of people coating the IHS look like they're going to lay a tile on it.

I followed that method for MX-2 as well. Remember that less is more with thermal paste - you want just enough to fill microscopic gaps between the bottom of the heatsink and the IHS, because thermal paste is a better thermal conductor than air. However, it's a far worse thermal conductor than metal, so you want as little as you can get away with so the metal of the heatsink and the IHS are as close as possible.
 
My new Q6600 came with 3 lines of thick paste on the pad of the fan. Not sure if thats standard nowadays but I was like wtf...thats not alot of paste.

That's not technically a paste.

It doesn't take a lot.

Pentium 4's had a big ass square of that stuff on the bottom of their heatsinks.

It's just another tpe of thermal interface material. And it's definitely adequate. Intel tested and specced it for your CPU and it's probably what all OEMs use. When the cpu heats up I imagine it flows a bit and settles into all the imperfections in the metal surfaces. It's not the best stuff, but it's adequate. It's also very quick to and simple for assembling boards for OEMs, and simple for DIY'ers as well that aren't so overclocking/cooling hardcore.

The more hardcore, carefully use a razor to scrape that off and scrub it clean with alcohol before using AC5 or some other after market thermal interface.
