Well, i'm little confused. I read alot about this. What some people do is that they apply this AS5 to their quad core cpu and to their heatsink. How? They put a small drop of the compound in the middle and spread it using an credit card creating a thin layer( almost transparent). That goes for both cpu and heatsink. I checked AS5 website, and this is what it says:

http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appinstruc...l_quad_wcap.pdf

I only need to put it on the cpu, not the heatsink! and I need to apply a fine line across the cpu heat spreader!

Now, is this something one should precisely follow?

It is ganna be my first time applying thermal compound. So those who have been playing with thermal compounds for years. Share your opinions with me.

Thanks.

As a rule I have had no issues at all with the instructions supplied by AC, even up to the C2D. After spending an hour with a folding team mate last night and trying several configurations what he found that worked best was a very thin layer over the top of the CPU. That gave him a full 5c drop over any other mode of application at 100% usage of 4 cores and dropped him into the high 40s low 50’s range.

He is using a Scythe Ninja with bigger fans, but he is still at stock speeds.

The fact is the Quad runs hot and I see very few, if any, good air cooled choices. To get a really good OC on my C2D I went with water cooling.

Luck;)

Just put an even thin layer and be done with. Use a clean credit card or a clean plastic over your finger then even out the paste.

I prefer to put a small dot in the middle, and then spread and push the paste around with my finger inside a sandwich baggy or similar. Gives a nice clean even layer.

I do the pea size drop in the center of IHS. But on bare die chips, the credit card method is the way to go IMO.
