Apple Goes Intel!

So what does this mean for the rest of MAC hardware? Does this mean I will be able to go buy an ATI X850 PCI-E and plug it into a MAC and it will work? Does it even make this possible?

Sort of. If the Intel Macs use regular intel chipsets, there should be no problems plugging in PC hardware. Apple seems to be going with ACPI and BIOS, so initialization will be the same.

Making it work will still require appropriate drivers though. The Mac OS is different enough from BSD, as far as devices go, that general PPC BSD device drivers don't work on OS X. That's not bad though. As long as cards with BIOS/firmware/endian differences don't exist (like current "Mac Edition" cards), x86 support for a BSD base won't be as big of a problem as it is now for PPC specific hardware.

Interesting. I wonder if this change will simplify things enough so that it is worth ATI/nVidia/game developers' time to make more games available on MACs and sooner.

however, here is one thing to think about. Apple has, in the past, kind of controlled their platform in a manner similar to the way video game consoles are.

that is, when Nintendo releases a Gamecube to market developers know *exactly* what the target hardware is and what it can and cannot do. Apple has controlled the Mac platform in a similar way. The video and audio cards in their base models (not counting additional sound mixing hardware from folks like Korg, Akai, etc) are "standardized" and controlled by Apple. So, as a developer, I can develop my awesome new ultra-cool 3D app to the exact specs of the video cards that I know are in the Apple platform.

Granted, Apple has strayed a little bit with this in recent years (first by using ATi parts and then later nVidia), but they control that migration such that the variance in drivers and interface from API perspective is kept to a minimum and is mitigated by the OS itself.

If Apple opens the platform too much, then consumers can start stocking their Macs with a whole smorgasboard of different and varied parts and the MacOS suddenly devolves into DLL hell very much akin to where DirectX is today. Thus, while I think we'll see an open-ness to *some* new parts (maybe Hauppauge TV tuner cards or the like), I don't think Apple will stray too much from their current MO.

Some here are too lazy to read the press release and see why Apple chose Intel : because what was disclosed to them convinced them that Intel had the best roadmap of all the players involved.

The difference between man and monkie is that the monkie can only see the present while the man thinks of the future.
Do you think Intel will stay with the P4 cores ( as we know them today and NOT Netburst overall ) forever ?

Yonah,Merom,etc...

Actually I disagree. I am forced to use Macs all the time. Generally speaking I think that OS X has gotten better with every major release. Tiger is no exception.

Roadmaps aside, lets not forget what Intel can do for Apple. HUGE volume discounts, not to mention the quality and reliability that Intel can bring to the Mac. Which has always been something Apple can and should be proud of. They've never sold low quality systems. Not to say they are always perfect. Intel has a good reputation as a manufacturer. It is also one of the more enviromentally conscious. Which should make the Apple hippies happy. :D

Intel will always have the capacity to deliver as well. AMD may not have the total capacity to do that. Plus, the things Intel processors do generally better than AMD chips are things like video editing and the 3d programs that are available for the Mac also tend to run better on Intel chips if there is a equivalent PC version.

All in all, it was the BEST choice for Apple overall. I think it was a good move. That being said, I'd really like to see some more wins for AMD. Even though they have made a few. AMD is still shaking the reputation of being a knock off processor maker.

For example, my company refuses to buy Opteron based servers. Even though HP is the primary supplier of server equipment. The powers that be some how have it in their heads that the Opteron is a Xeon knockoff. No matter what I tell them.

Typical lame Gundeep Hora "article." It's not even funny... it's just sad. Apple isn't going to be using P4s. The timeframe and especially the "performance per watt" slide points towards the P-M or derivatives, probably Yonah. There should be no negatives for Yonah (dual core): it's cool, cheap to manufacture and very, very fast.

AMD could have easily produced the CPUs for Apple, but that's not the only requirement. See above for what AMD can't provide.

Actually, they are going to be using Pentium 4's. Thier first machine I read on the yahoo news was a P4 3.6GHz.

Yeah, but the P4 shown at the WWDC was more proof of technology. In fact, since they've been compiling on x86 for five years now, I'd imagine that it'd also run (at least Puma and the older version) on a PIII.

However, for Apple's future, I wouldn't imagine them using anything other than the latest and greatest dual-core rigs -- again, except in the notebook arena where power consumption is critical. Who knows, we very well may see Macs running on Centrino hardware.

Not at all, that was just the Demo unit.

Here's the view from Mac Writers.

MAC World said:
The first Apple systems in 2006 will use Intel’s Pentium M processor, according to sources familiar with the companies’ plans. The Pentium M uses the same x86 architecture as the Pentium 4, but consumes far less power than Pentium 4 chips and its design philosophy is expected to be the model for Intel’s future processors. Apple spokespeople did not return repeated calls seeking comment, and an Intel spokesman declined to comment on Apple’s product decisions.

Jobs justified the move away from the PowerPC architecture to Intel’s x86 architecture based largely on Intel’s ability to deliver a high-performance per watt ratio compared to IBM’s future chips. This would tend to favor the Pentium M, which is just as powerful as high-end Pentium 4 processors yet uses far less power, Intel executives said earlier this year.

So AMD Fan***s can spin all they like, PM is what they have to shoot for, NOT the P4. Turion got spanked and that was the last draw as they say. Intel will combind the best fot he P4 and PM for their next models. 65nm has been up and running for months and Apple saw they liked.

IBM had problems and the've been helping AMD. If IBM can't get their own done right, then AMD is seen as being in trouble as well. The sooner Intel kills off the P4, the sooner Intel Haters will loose their best excuse for Intel bashing. The rest of the market will see these (Hardware Biggots) for what they really are.

Again, there's more to a great computer than a speedy processor. Intel is a System supplier and AMD is a parts supplier. Going with a parts supplier would have meant Apple would have less control. We all know how Apple loves control.

I can't keep track of all of those damn cat names... its too unorganized!!

They need to keep their theme organized...
like start with small and work their way up:

Ocelot, Bobcat, Leopard, Panther, Jaguar, Lion, Tiger (siberian)

(so you know which one is the most recent / best / biggest)

Then start with another animal.... with lots of varieties. but stay organized!
Chihuahua.... ...Spaniel...... .....Mastiff (dogs)
Tamarin.... Spider.... Chimp... Orangutang.... Gorilla... (primates)

I hate how people say Windows sucks balls... look at it like this.

If MacOS was as widely used, or even Linux for that matter, do you really think they would be as stable as they are now? Fuck no. Pretty much EVERYTHING is made to effect Windows users, which is why Max and Linux people arent effected by much of anything. For what Windows is, it is pretty damn stable, you just have to take precautions.

Alright. I saw this post and i decided to take a brake from creeping around. I'd like to take a quick moment and point out what that "sounds" like. You just wrote a post to a thread that sounds like :

" The reason why windows operating systems are so unstable is because everybody uses them."

Which is insane. Thats like telling me that back when I was using windows 98 that the reason it was always crashing and giving me the BSOD was because it was so popular.

What I think you mean is:

"There is no inherent security advantage between microsoft software, apple software and open source software. The only reason mac and linux users don't get spyware and adware is security through obscurity."

That is a strong arguement but I think you are wrong. I don't deny that popularity is an issue with Windows security. But, I think the BIGGEST problem with windows is that it wasn't designed to be secure. That is just my humble opinion.

adware, spyware and most viruses are the result of active . I don't see how Microsoft or anyone who supports them could argue that they actually design windows to be secure. You don't see Active X in things like debian, slackware, freebsd, Solaris, OpenVMS , or even Mac os ten.

You also don't see common adware and spyware on those systems. I think thats why. And that is the most polite way I can respond to your statement. As much as I would like to insult your intelligence personally I am not going to. Instead, im going to hit the submit button, get out of my chair, and take about 3 advils.

BOO!!!

However, Schiller said the company does not plan to let people run Mac OS X on other computer makers' hardware. "We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac," he said.

That's exactly it. Apple talked to both and AMD had trouble with delivering the amount Apple required. There's also a rumour that the move to intel over AMD was because of the Penium M Apple sells more laptops than desktops. And they are known for thier great battery life. The Penium M would allow them to keep this standard.

LOL! For every ONE AMD user (note, I didn't say Fan) who cries over this, there are at least FOUR Intel users doing the same. Do you think there will be a DIYer MAC?

something i just thought of: (forgive me if its already been posted)

this is based on if intel decides to make it so any PC can run OSX

the good:
we all get OSX without the expensive computer that used to go with it!

the bad:
viruses start popping up all over the place because OSX will become almost as popular as windows.....since the whole reason OSX is virus free is because virus makers don't wanna waste time making something that will affect a very small portion of people....

i dont like the bad.....dont like it at all

about the pentium M.......waddabout AMDs Turion chips :/

huh? huh!? although i admit the P-M is an extremely impressive chip, especially the dothans

i love the battery life of apples laptops....they better keep that long battery life without a big speed loss...or else

Well I'm not sure. Sure APPLE says that, but there will most likely be someone out there who is going to make a Mod Chip that will allow it to be installed anywhere. And those people will be the people pirating the software to begin with. Now would I want that chip? Probably not, but I could see this happening.

Udate! A good read.

MacAddict 10.3

They are using a Pentium 4 660. This is a 3.6 GHz chip. It supports 64 bit extensions, but Apple does not support that *yet*. The 660 is a single core processor. However, the engineers said that this chip would not be used in a shipping product and that we need to look at Intel's roadmap for that time to see what Apple will ship.

This was interesting.

Also, all the cell people and the AMD people need to be quiet. Apple evaluated both. AMD has the same, if not worse, supply problems as IBM. Their roadmap is fine, but the production capacity is not.

Ouch!

I can imagine an Apple optimized board that will have OSX (a new version) with the capability of dual running Microsoft software built into the OS. I expect that Apple will exploit and use every built in Intel ingredients into the new OS to outdistance them from Microsoft again. Their board will be the most efficient, capable and fastest board on the market to utilize the new features of the Intel design that Microsoft has lagged behind: Advanced features that Longhorn will not even have. Can you imagine a computer for the home and work place that will run both systems, at the same time, from one computer? Almost everything said in this thread is conjuncture because Apple will not let anything out of the bag until next year. So I and many other wait to see what they will do.

WOW, great views. Please don't overlock Processor SIMDs. These have been wasted and not really understood at all. How quickly and completely was Incoming Forces hidden. IF proved that even games could make great use of SIMD (in this case SSE2).

What if the used Yonah for Powerbooks and Xeons for Desktops? Maybe that was the reason Intel delayed them (Dual Core Xeons) until H1 06?

How the hell would x86 Macs improve Linux gaming? And what do you mean by "Linux is under all that fluff in osx [sic]?" There is no Linux in OS X, and there never will be. It's POSIX compliant, but that's about it.
