Apple Considering iPhone Rebate

At least one analyst thinks that Apple’s strategy should be to subsidize the cost of the iPhone with a rebate. Personally, I think that if I am paying $75 - $100 a month (quoted in the article) on a two year service plan, Apple should just give me the phone for free.

In an in-depth research note released to clients on Tuesday, American Technology analyst Shaw Wu cited sources who indicate that a mail-in rebate or carrier subsidy for iPhone of $50-150 is under serious consideration by the Cupertino-based electronics firm.

$500 for the base phone then $75-$100/mo to use it? I think Apple's been smoking the same stuff that Sony has been.

Regardless of who it is...

...They need to share.

'Cuz this stuff makes you do some immorally, DUMBA** things.

It does look COOL though, so someone is doing something right :)

It looks cool? It looks like a rounded rectangle with an LCD screen on the front. Most of your PocketPC phones look better than the iPhone.

That's not exactly an unusual monthly fee for cell plans, especdially for those that buy high-end phones.

$350 is still too much for me (especially since it's Cingular), but if it worked with Sprint and I was in the market for an iPod anyway, that's not that bad.

8GB Nano must cost 200 bucks.....$150.00 for a phone (after rebates) is not that unusual. The Sanyo M-1 and Samsung 610 (the super thin phone) were roughly $200 AR when released. Sanyo's was designed for music, but it was clunky, kinda ugly, had limited storage, that couldn't be upgraded, and I doubt it could play back music gaplessly. The Samsung wasn't really a media phone, but it take SD cards.

The one thing missing from the iphone, and I think it's a biggie, is the lack of 3G data. But I've read that Cingular's got crappy 3g coverage, so maybe it won't matter.

There's a "hack" out to do just that with Windows Mobile 5 devices - even mimicks the Lock slider down to a proverbial "T". Brilliant stuff. :)

If I puchased an I-Phone, it would just get bashed up after a couple of months, just like every other cell I have ever owned. The only difference is after I drop the I-Phone I will scream bloody murder, knowing that this is not disposable like every other cell I have ever owned. I-Phone. No thank you!

Exactly. I have come to the conclusion all cell phones suck. Actually, I've had better luck with the cheaper $20 phones than anything else. The more expensive, the more complex, the easier it breaks. 1989 brick phones FTMFW!?!

.

Except when you sign up for high end phones of other carriers, they are usually cheap to free for that long of a contract.

Right now you can get the i830 or the xv6700 for $1 from some Verizon dealers if you sign up for their two year contract.

Paying $100 and paying $500+ is ridiculous to say the least.

Or were you responding to functionality and not the looks? If you are going to say it does more, what more does it do that is useful and save you time over a PocketPC? Does the iPhone have GPS? A wide array of software apps that integrate with all your work software at the job site? Bar code scanner apps for warehouse inventory? etc..?

Ummm...no they aren't. Hot new high end phones are never free . You can now find an M1 for free (at least for new subscribers). 3 months ago, it was at least $200.00 AFTER REBATE. Most of Sprints PDA like phones are 250 to $400 AR.

Hell, if you look at the 6700, from Verizon it runs $300.00 AR with 2 year contract.

If you're looking for a free phone, you're not the target customer. I consider myself generally cheap, but I'm not sure I've ever gone for a free phone. My last phone was a Sanyo MM7400 and I paid between 130 and 180 after rebate, and that was from Costco which was significantly less than every other seller at the time. And because someone said they break easilly, I've dropped this phone all over the place, and have no problems.

Please re-read my post.

I paid $750 for my phone when it first came out.

I did, but most carriers that I've looked at are not selling the high end phones for a buck. Several hundred AR (with a contract) is more typical

And i haven't seen a place that sells the phone you mentioned for a buck either.

Am I missing something?
