Months after problems were first reported, Apple is finally acknowledging that some of its MacBooks have faulty hard drives. The company is “looking into” the problem. Well that is reassuring.

Retrodata, a U.K. data recovery firm, reported earlier this year that certain 2.5-inch Seagate drives used in MacBooks had a manufacturing flaw that causes the drive heads to scratch the surface of the drive and cause major problems.

hrmm this kinda sucks, seagate was the last good hard-disk company that i havent had major issues with their drives

Every drive manufacturer has problems once in a while. IBM had its tryst with the Deskstar series (aka "Deathstar") before they sold their hard drive unit to Hitachi. I'm sure that many of you older system builders remember the fiascos that came from the first batch of Western Digital 4.3 gig drives, and so forth.

It just happens to be Seagate's turn, and I'll still continue using them, since their customer service has been excellent.

The real finger of blame should be pointed at (Cr)apple, for trying to use the Bill Clinton methods of dealing with the problem.

ya i have never been a fan of WD... the computers at work were specd with dell rebadged WD raptors (80gb version) and we have had a huge failure rate, i would say at least 1 in 4...

but i also think that could be the lack of cooling around them in those crappy dell cases... so the drives run at like the temperature of the sun

My sister's MacBook crashed last week less than a month out of warranty and no Apple-Care. I swear they plan it so most failures will happen at just over a year...

could be a thermal issue unique to macbooks (maybe other brand hd they use have a lower thermal output)

i wouldnt put it on segate yet, need more details on the issue
