Apogee install question

Are there any springs used to install the Apogee onto a 939 system? The only hardware that came for doing a 939 mount was a few spacers, lock washers, and screws. I would think there are some springs or something to apply pressure to the CPU. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

I found these springs in one of the bags marked Socket 462, 478, 775, 603/604. Are these the ones I'm suppose to use?

If i remember correctly, they were longer...

Out of curiosity, what are the spacers made out of? Perhaps they changed them to rubber instead of plastic which might negate the need for springs.

Well, looking at the instructions that you linked to on Swiftech's website, it would appear that they have ditched the Apogee's spring-mounts for s939 and AM2 in the newer production batches. To say the very least, this is a bit odd...

Are they getting so cheap now that, to offset the cost of the additional AM2 mounting bracket, they've stopped including two sets of springs and, instead, just switched to plastic spacers? :rolleyes: I wonder when they're gonna release the Apogee 1U-T (aka MCW60-T with a different set of mounting hardware).... ;)

(and, in case Gabe happens to be lurking around here somewhere... that was a joke. Please keep sending us our stuff :D )

Really, though, from an ease of installation standpoint, I can see why they made the switch--it's just a switch that a few in the enthusiast community may not entirely agree with.
 
And really you don't need the springs. You just have to be a little more careful. Putting the spacers on top and nothing between the block and the board forces you to get more even pressure on the cpu than with the spacer on the bottom but at least then you can unlid your chip and still tighten the block down on it if you want.

Looking at it, they have shortened the screws a bit it seems and done away with the springs. It could work I suppose, with the spacers below and an IHS on 939 cpu's, you can tighten it down 100% without worry. Since their website has been updated, I highly doubt anythign will be done about this, they will likely say something along the lines of it being unnessesary or a 'cosmetic improvement' (like when they switched the radbox from metal to plastic).
 
Well, I just got the apogee last week or so, and they still had the springs...
 
According to what Gabe from Swiftech told me this was expected. The 939 install and the nV 6XXX up all lost their springs and use spacers to mount now. I'd give it a try following the linked instructions and see how your paste spreads.

IIRC I believe Swiftech is going to do away with springs in everything but 775 and 478 mountings but don't hold me to that. It has to do with the 478 and 775 having too much variation in socket height whereas the others don't.
 
Okay I tried doing it with the hardware Swiftech included....it sucks BALLS! WHen you tighten down the screws or unscrew them it leaves metal shavings all over the god damn place. I just used my trusty 'ol DangerDen install system that I had for my Maze4 and it worked out great.

:edit: Also, with the block installed using Swiftech hardware there was not enough pressure on the socket to make the block work. I was hitting 67c while playing WoW :eek: And I had that pupppy as tight as I could get it.
 
Well, I still have the hardware from my Storm that I am not using (destroyed the Storm via curiosity....long story). Let me know if it would help you. Both the Apogee and Storm use the same installation but the Storm kit has the springs (as did my Apogee kit bought from performance-pcs).
 
Be careful not to put too much pressure on the block, because you might end up arching the block, which leaves a gap between the block and the heatspreader of the CPU.

That can also lead to higher temps.

I own an apogee as well, and some folks were speculating that due to how thin the block is, that there may be a chance of this arching. (copper is softer than steel after all)

I removed my mobo, and flipped the screws over and used washers and a base plate from my DFI mobo. I then used springs and nuts to tighten the block on (from socket 775 installation hardware), kept the spacers on to prevent overtightening.
