I have a Back-UPS XS 800 made by APC. its always worked fine, but lately ive had problems with it.

the other day, i come to my desktop seeing its off. like no power at all. the ups even showed it was dead, like not getting any power.

all i did then was push the button on the ups and it turned back on. weird i thought, but i let it go.

then, just now, the ups fires into backup mode and sound the alarm (as its supposed to). then, 3 sec later, poof, out goes the whole pc, ups shut off completely. (battery is charged!)

the ups is probably almost 5 years old... does it sound like its dying? its never acted anything like this before, its been a rock solid way to make sure my pc never loses power...:(

That's exactly what mine did when it died. If you want to keep it around just as a surge protector, unplug everything from it, turn the button off, and let it charge for 3 or 4 days. Then it should be good to go until the power goes out again.

Otherwise, APC has some good tradeup discounts.

well thats not what i wanted to hear... damn.

i didnt know apc did trade ups though...

its not worth keeping around for the surge protection, the mov's are probably used up by now anyway

sigh... apc.. its not an effective 'green' program if your products are overpriced. it's not 25% off if you have a 25% markup:rolleyes:

they will trade me up for a 900va model for $125 plus shipping. i paid $119 in a brick store 5 years ago for this 800va... and the 800va model they have to trade in is also $125. for the 900va model, they have the same exact one at best buy online right now for $129 shipped.

so, screw apc's recycle program, this thing is going in the landfill. ill keep the batteries, im sure theyre still good. and i probably will buy another apc, as the other options really arent any better in the budget market.

Is that the original battery in the unit?

batteries are probably gone and the UPS is fine.

I had a 5 year old APC backups Pro 1100 fail on me, it wouldn't power on. It would beep a couple of times and then shut down.
Emailed them and asked about any procedure to test the unit since the batteries were gone (they looked like they were about to explode) and I didn't want to spend $100 on batteries if the APC unit was bad.
They emailed back asking for the serial number and my shipping info and then informed me that they were going to ship me out a new unit for free. 2 days later I had a brand new APC Back-Ups RS1200.

wow... something tells me you were on some sort of internal recall list!! youre lucky to be alive with a battery like that- i bet apc was thinking the same thing

one thing i havent been running for the last few months is powerchute. i installed it just now and im going to run a few tests and see what happens. if i unplugg the ups now it runs everything just fine....

nail on head, zepher. ran a self test and 2 sec into the backup mode it flashes a red-light alarm acting like a nuke bomb is about to happen. test results simply said "your battery needs to be replaced immediately"

its running in protection mode right now, not charging. when i popped out the batteries (2 of them) one of them is much warmer then the other, so theres probably the short.

off to email apc.. im going to ask them how to test my unit without batteries and they will just be kind and give me a whole new one:D i seriously doubt that will happen, but i wouldnt mind a fesh set of batteries (which radioshack sells them for $15 a pop, its not a big deal really)

apc told me to trade-up. i asked them again to help me find out if the unit is properly working (all it probably needs is batteries, i just want to be sure).

we will see what happens...

apc doesnt want much to do with it. they want a trade up, of course...

or repair center they said... but it would cost me $30 just to ship it, and probably more money then the unit is worth to check it over. so instead i spent $30 on a set of batteries. locally they cost $30 a piece, online i had them shipped for $30 a pair:rolleyes:

i did actually have a pair of sla's in my garage... both just from various hobbies and stuff. i think one of them is about 8 years old, so i wasnt surprised when i plugged those in the apc unit didnt really like them. it did pass the first self-test though with those batteries, but once everything was hooked up and the self test ran again, it died in 5sec under load.

it could possibly mean the inverter inside is weak, but im betting on the batteries still.

new batteries are in. self tests pass without problem, everything seems great. well worth $30.
