I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I need to ask it.
I had an APC Smart UPS 1500 go really bad tonight. I started smelling something "odd" and my wife said it was really strong down in the office. I knew my UPS had started warning that my battery needed to be replaced, but it must have gone south really really fast because the UPS was hot to the touch and was emitting a horrible smell. I recognized the smell from work where the UPS batteries in the server room had started bulging last summer.
I pulled the UPS out of the room and out to the garage where I was able to remove the very swollen/bulging battery packs and get them outside. In the process of cleaning up I found about 10 small drops of liquid where the battery had sat on the concrete. In the office I found a small spot about the size of a nickel of the leakage with a few tiny drops. I cleaned up the liquid with baking soda to neutralize the acid.
Lesson learned tonight: when the software tells you your battery is about dead and the red light starts flashing on the UPS, get it out asap!
It made no mark on my plastic chair mat. Do I need to take the mat out or do you think by neutralizing the tiny leak and cleaning up afterwards I am ok to continue using the mat in my house?
Thanks in advance!
