APC Smart UPS Leak

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I need to ask it.

I had an APC Smart UPS 1500 go really bad tonight. I started smelling something "odd" and my wife said it was really strong down in the office. I knew my UPS had started warning that my battery needed to be replaced, but it must have gone south really really fast because the UPS was hot to the touch and was emitting a horrible smell. I recognized the smell from work where the UPS batteries in the server room had started bulging last summer.

I pulled the UPS out of the room and out to the garage where I was able to remove the very swollen/bulging battery packs and get them outside. In the process of cleaning up I found about 10 small drops of liquid where the battery had sat on the concrete. In the office I found a small spot about the size of a nickel of the leakage with a few tiny drops. I cleaned up the liquid with baking soda to neutralize the acid.

Lesson learned tonight: when the software tells you your battery is about dead and the red light starts flashing on the UPS, get it out asap!

It made no mark on my plastic chair mat. Do I need to take the mat out or do you think by neutralizing the tiny leak and cleaning up afterwards I am ok to continue using the mat in my house?

Thanks in advance!

Did you properly clean off the battery acid? If so, then you should be able to use the mat. Heh, even though the battery needs to be replaced, it should not have leaked. Call APC, they have great support. I have the older model of yours, and my battery leaked, too. They replaced my entire unit, no questions asked, after telling me how to clean the acid. I just had to send in the entire unit after I had received the replacement.

BTW, are you running powerchute? If so, which version? hehe, thanks.

enginurd - I knew it needed to be replaced, but I never expected it to die that fast, nor swell up to the point that it was really wedged in the unit. Thank goodness we smelled the venting gas or it could have been a really bad scene here.

I may do that, call APC. Not sure I could get away with shipping a battery that is swollen and leaking.

Properly clean it? I couldn't find any real good info on the right way to clean it. I neutralized the drips with baking soda, carefully swept the soda powder up (not with my broom though, no need to ruin that) and then cleaned the area with Fantastic.

Its still leaking? Mine stopped by the time it came time to ship it, lol. I just bagged it in the same bag the replacement came in, and shipped it (prepaid by APC). I bagged the entire unit, Smart UPS with battery still inside, because thats what they sent me. Call 'em up, its not supposed to leak at all. Yah, it sounds like you cleaned it good enough.
