You deserve it man. How much time some of you guys dedicate to the community outside of your normal jobs blows my mind.

I don't know enough to even come close to vExpert, but I too don't get how those who are vExperts are able to dedicate the amount of time necessary to become one to it. I just don't know how that's possible.

Congrats....as far as I can tell, dedicating time for these types of activities requires total discipline and a supporting family one of which I have..the other not so much..lol....have to work at it..one of my goals this year is nail down scheduling and planning, both of which I need much work.
 
I never spend time on VMware's community forums...just here. But this counts too. As well as the speaking I do at VMUGs, VMworld, and other events along with blogging, TrainSignal work, and stuff I do on Twitter. It's just community involvement. It's not something I schedule, it's part of what I do for my job and to build my own brand.
 
I wasn't implying that you "scheduled" your time to do these things, I was simply stating that for my own benefit that I need to get a bit more organized etc so I can start putting some effort in my Blog, in the community etc..
 
I was talking to a colleague of mine about this yesterday and we had the notion to look up how many vExperts are in consulting, then we realized how much time it would take to look this up and decided to have another cold one instead. ;)

Still, it does make me wonder whether the overwhelming majority of vExperts are working in consulting/VAR. The rationale for the question is whether those who work in operations actually have an opportunity to be exposed to as much technology as those in consulting.

Sure, the ops guys can read up on stuff, but the datacenter is what it is and ordinarily there's little turn-over in the type/brand of hardware and software deployed.

Seems like vExperts have to know a lot about a lot. ;)

The vExpert originally wasn't for partners. It was for people running VMUGs and speaking at events..and if you work for a partner or manufacturer you aren't allowed to run a VMUG. You had people like me that work for a partner but also did a lot of community things..and now they've added a "partner path" to the vExpert as well...but I don't use that. I go through the standard community route.

It's not about how much stuff you touch..it's about if you give back to the community.
 
I am a vExpert 2013. You don't see my evangelism outside, but inside of DISA things are different.

Only two of those people are not working for either a manufacturer or a partner. We even have an EMC employee on our steering committee. I see partners on several leadership groups for VMUGs so I'm not sure how that can be accurate.

Eh....it used to be you weren't allowed to do it as a partner. But..with the split of the VMUG from VMware (they are now separate entities) I guess things are loosening up. Not a surprise. It's hard to keep a user group going if it's run by non-partners. Your best supporters usually end up at a partner or manufacturer.
 
The Syracuse VMUG has started back up thank God. We were just contacted and I was asked to speak at an upcoming event. Looking forward too it. Currently working on a Stretched Cluster for a University and will probably talk about that and SRM as they seem to be hot topics lately and i'm finding more and more use cases for Stretched Cluster.
 
Our big Carolina VMware Summit is this week. If anyone is in the area..it's Thursday in CLT. WELL worth attending.
