My PC and router run 24/7 in my bedroom so I don't want any LEDs keeping me awake at night. Besides I am an Electrical Engineer and tend to look at things from a logical point of view.

I built my PC with no case power and HD activity lights connected. I figured if it is running it must have power. And if I can open files the HD must be working. Why do I need an LED to tell me the obvious?

I cut the LEDs out of my fan speed controller. They are always the same brightness no matter what my fan speeds, so don't serve any useful purpose at all except for Bling! and to suck power.

I also cut the LEDs out of my Antec Phantom PSU. I figured if the computer turns on, the PSU must be working.

Next I cut the LEDs out of my router. I don't need a power LED, Internet activity light, A/G mode, and link and activity lights to show me it is working. As long as I can access the Internet, I know it is working.

Next I got anal and covered the green power indicator on my monitor with black Sharpie Marker. Well duh! it displays a picture, it must be working.

And the surge suppressor power switch got the Sharpie Marker treatment too. Now I can sleep at night without my room being lit up with 16 useless LEDs.
 
I would agree with you on all but the router... wel the activity light at least... if you're not using the connection and you notice activity I'd say something fishy is about
 
Not really, as my router and cable modem are always in communication with each other but I haven't ever had a breach yet. They are pretty cool, as long as you don't sleep in the same room! I agree with your reasoning; pics of darkness not needed. ;)
 
The only ones I find any use for at all are NumLock, CapsLock, and FLock on a keyboard.
 
i sleep in the same room as my PC and i did them same thing... but i just put paper over the router and modem... black construction paper.

no leds on my speakers... cases, monitors... i have 4 UV cold cathodes but they are on a switch...

Yeah, I hated that damn flash... It was soo bright. So a little black tape and BAM! no more flash. ;)
 
harddrive light - it is nice to know if your using your comp, and it seems slow, and it is nothing else and you check and your HD light is on solid :)

but otherthen that, agree for most the others.
 
With like 6 computers on my router, I NEED to know which ones are accessing the internet ;)
 
The light around my power button on my Antec Solo is just too beautiful to not want on :D Besides i'm obsessive and if there's something that's not working it bugs me.

I lit my computer on fire once cause the 400 LED's weren't extreme enough for me......?

That is just like me. Like the HDD light is on continually never goes off. It makes me mad that i can not figure out why either

By your logic, I'm surprised you cannot tell NumLock is active ('because numbers appear), CapLock is On (because it's YELLING) or Flock is active (because it's flocking) ;)

I've done anti-led mods, but rather than eliminate the indicators, I replace them with 'old-school' incandescent or neon pilot lamps... I prefer the glow :D

If it turns off during hard drive activity then it is plugged into the wrong pins on the MOBO.

'My computer not running...is it the psu? Dunno, no light. Is it the fuse? Dunno, no light. Is it my mobo? Dunno, no light. I've no net connection, is it my network card, router or ISP? Dunno, no lights. My monitors not working, is it the monitor or the computer? Dunno, I've got no fucking lights! arrgh!

As an electrical enginer you are not looking at this from a logical point of view at all, imo.

That's what my voltmeter, other PCs, and boxes of parts are for. :)

I think what they were trying to say is "When the light is inadiquite, system builders rely on intuition when reaching into a slightly shaded case."

Unless your 1337 like me and build pc's from scratch without the lights on...

screw wirecutters and crap that takes up time, just stick electrical tape on all your LEDs like I did to everything like I did, and build a ghetto baffle with a Linksys product registration card like I did to direct light away from the annoying LED fan on the back of my Powerstream PSU.

Indeed, but you will save yourself a great deal of grief by not doing it, but that's not what your idea is about. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, and you may never have a problem with your system anyway.

Solution - sleep with your eyes closed ;)
 
You would love my monitor, 22" westinghouse, it has no power LED! I noticed that the other day, Now I dont know if the monitor is off or if it is just in sleep mode.
 
So you're the guy who stole my Westinghouse? Because I went to Bestbuy on Friday and they had just sold the last $299 one.
 
i use masking tape, cut into tiny circles using a very small holepunch. You can still see the light, but it's quite dim.
