Antec P180B w/ high temps?

I bought a P180B, spent several hours on cable management, and installed my Main PC in it (see sig).

Here's my idle temps:

CPU: 52c
System: 45c
GPU: 50c

Isn't this a little high?

I have the stock Antec 120mm TriCool fans, one at the top back, one at the blowhole and one in the bottom HD/PSU chamber.

I'm not using the removable 3.5" bay. Should I add one or two fans there?

FYI I'm in Alabama; it's not exactly cool here.

Any other advice to get these temps down?

Remove front air filters, leave filter covers off and door open. You cannot imagine how badly those filter and covers kill the airflow into the case. HUGE temp decreases when I did it.

It's ugly, but mine hides in a cubby hole in my desk. I also replaced all of my tricools with the thick 38mm tricools - they flow a lot more air at the same speed.

you'd better remount the heatsink. 52c idle is way too hot. you might also want to check the direction of your fans

I've reseated the heat sink...twice...and the results don't change.

I realized this problem when I bought my new X2 4600 and immediately had temperature problems in my old case.

All three case fans are blowing the hot air out of the case.

I've also touched the CPU heatsink while the computer is on and it doesn't feel hot.

I've heard that it may be my mobo reporting temps that are too high. I doubted this at first but now I'm beginning to agree with it. I've done everything I can, including buying a new, cooler case and spending hours on cable management, and I still have high temps.

What should I do to get these down?

download speedfan, it gives pretty accurate temps
Sorry for not mentioning it; I have SpeedFan too. It reports the same temps as Nvidia Monitor.

What configuration do you have those fans in, and what speed are they set at? if its set to low you could try bumping it up to medium or high.

I have the top two fans set to low and connected to a regular molex connector.

I have the bottom PSU/HD fan set to high and connected to a "Fan Only" molex connector from my Antec TruePower 2.0 PSU. The case manual says to set fans to high when connecting them to Antec PSU's "Fan Only" connectors, which is what I did.

I'll try increasing the top two fans to high.

Anything else I should try?

You mentioned that its hot out there, how hot is the ambient room temperature, and is the cpu overclocked? Oh, and your fans are fine, i just wanted to make sure that you didn't have all of the fans facing out and creating a vacuum.

I'm not OCing. If my math is right, the ambient temp is 30c.

which thermapaste did you use and how did you apply it?
AS5. I tried the credit card method before and the plastic bag method next, adding a grain of rice sized portion of AS5. Both methods resulted in 50+ idle temps.

I added a Yang Loon 120mm fan to the removable HD bay in the front-middle of the case, as well as raising the back fans from low to high. It dropped my temps a few degrees; they're still way too high though.

FYI I have my PSU's "PSU Fan Monitor" cable connected to my mobo's "CHA1 Fan" connector. Should I try disconnecting it? Also, the mobo's chipset fan and the CPU fan are both connected to their respective mobo fan connections.

Here's a screenshot of SpeedFan (maybe this will help):

No one else noticed this? You need cool air coming in!
I just added two front intake fans to the removable HD bay and the temps stayed the same.

I had the same problem with a A8N32. Cpu was idling at 47 to 48. I updated to the latest bios. That fixed the idle problem.

Honestly those X2's do run pretty hot. Are you sure the HSF is tight enough on the cpu? I loved using the nice easy clips with A64's. It seems to hold tight on the board, but after using a big typhoon and bolting it down, its MUCH tigher.

Also, was this chip brand new? Was the IHS removed? If so you might want to check it, or even remove it. If you do this you do void the warranty you have at all.

Temps do seem high, but again, X2's run hot compared to other AMD chips.

I agree the X2s do run hotter, but from what it sounds like to me it's your bios. Have you updated to the latest one? I have had boards like this before, I sometimes go by the "touch" factor. If it doesn't seems that hot to you, then i would say it's just incorrect reading in your bios.

wow 52c??? JESUS. I just installed my stuff in my new p180 last night. I'm running a 4400+ with the stock heatsink and um, it idles at like 40.

Something is really wrong. You best make sure that heatsink is mounted tightly for sure, double check, recheck. Make sure you applied the thermal compound right (not to be insulting) but that sucker is warm.

Just out of curiosity, can you post what your temps are using this program: http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/Hidden_Stuff/CoreTemp.zip

It's called Core Temp, and basically when I ran it, it was far more accurate when compared to Speedfan, Smartguardian, or MBM. Below is a brief description:

"This is a new program that lets you monitor Intel's "Core", "Core 2" and all AMD K8 chips' die temperature. The temperature readings are very accurate as the data is collected from a Digital Thermal Sensor (or DTS) which is located in each individual processing core, near the hottest part."

http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=137

I have the same case as you, and my GPU is running at 49C, so basically the same. The only temp that I'd be worried about is the CPU at this point.

SpeedFan v4.29
Temp1: 35C
Temp2: 42C
HDD0: 33C
HDD1: 35C
Core: 30C

Fan1: 1974 RPM Zalman (full would be ~2440 RPM)
Fan3: 874 RPM Enermax 120mm fan

Case: CASE: Antec P180
CPU: Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Dual Core S939 Toledo
HSF: Zalman CNPS9500 LED Copper CPU Heat Sink 92MM Fan
Motherboard: Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe nForce4 SLI X16
RAM: 2GB (Corsair XMS-3500LL PRO 2GB kit) PC3500 CL2/1T
Video: ATI Radeon X1800XT 512MB PCI-E Dual DVI HDTV-OUT
HDDs: 2 x 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA 3Gb/s 7200RPM 16MB
PSU: Enermax Liberty EL620AWT 620W Modular ATX12V v2.2
Etc

What I did:

Lower Chamber Antec 120x38mm fan draws air IN, around HDD1, passed on into/around the PSU and OUT the back.

Upper Chamber blowhole fan removed and opening covered with clear duct tape.
(Would interfere with front IN fan-Zalman fan-rear OUT air flow)

Video card vents all it’s heat OUT of the case.

Upper Chamber Antec 120x25mm installed in front mount draws air IN, around HDD0 and onto motherboard.

Zalman fan assists the force of internal air-flow, draws heat especially from the RAM sticks, over/through the motherboard heatpipe rad fins and into the upper rear exhaust fan.

Upper chamber upper rear Antec 120x25mm vents heat OUT of the case.

Cool, filtered and quiet.

Happy trailz,

I've updated to the latest BIOS with no luck. I even flashed to the latest beta BIOS today and the temps are still high.

FYI I used to have this same mobo in a different case with an AMD64 3500 and had similar temps:

CPU: 50
System: 50
GPU: 60

Is my mobo at fault here? What should I do?

It is on there tight. I've touched the base of the heatsink and it doesn't feel that hot.

If it doesn't feel hot, it could be your motherboard reporting the temps incorrectly (as nodle already stated a few posts back). It's for this reason you need to download and instal Core Temp Beta in my previous post to see exactly what your CPU is measuring.

Remember, Speedfan reads from the onboard motherboard sensor (whereas Core Temp Beta grabs the info right from the die of the CPU itself), so try the other program (or a BIOS update, whatever you prefer) and let us know.

Well, thank you for trying that program. Very odd that it too reported the same temp as the others (not the case for my PC), perhaps it still has some bugs that need to be ironed out?

In any event, I didn't read that you had similar temps with your previous A64 setup. If the heatsink doesn't feel hot, the one thing I would do is unplug the fan (on the heatsink itself). Then, wait about 2-5 minutes and touch the heatsink. Is it getting warm? At least this way you know it's working correctly, and if so, disregard anything the motherboard is telling you.

It really does appear as though the motherboard is at fault here. Just don't worry about it so long as programs are running normal and your system isn't locking up while gaming. Besides, the inside of your case can't be that hot either if your video card is running at 50C idle...that's definitely normal!

*Edit* I know you said you're in Alabama, so granted your ambient temperature of 86F is a lot warmer than my basement temp of 72-75F in the summertime. So, as you've stated in your previous threads, that could very likely be the cause for a +10C increase in temp (remember mine idle at 40-42C).

3 minutes after I unplugged its fan the CPU jumped to 80c - at which point I quickly turned off the machine. It's not the heatsink/fan.

So should I just give up and wait until fall for cooler ambient temps?

Good, well we know that your heatsink is doing an excellent job of cooling that processor...especially if you said it was cool to the touch with the fan enabled, and hot as hell without it :p.

I honestly would wait until fall for lower temperatures and in the meantime just use your PC as you normally would. If you haven't seen it, below is one site listing max CPU temperatures, and yours comes in at 65C, so I think you're ok (mine never jumps above 55, which is a 15C increase over idle, and I doubt yours will either). Good luck, and when it's cooler, post back to let us know if anything changed!!

I have the same case and I initially had problems with high temps also. I first put a Yate Loon in the front fan mount but that had very little impact on my temps. I switched to a 89 CFM fan in the front and that made a huge difference. With the Yate Loon temps on the chipset were around 42C and with the new fan they are around 35 and this is in 27C ambient temps. When it is cooler (~24C) my system temps get down to about 32C.

My fans are set like this:
Front intake 89cfm ("turbine" fan from frozencpu.com)
top rear fan blowing in on low (this works well with my Scythe Ninja might also work for you)
rear outake fan on high
the fan in the HDD/PSU area is set to medium

For my system this seems to be the best cooling solution. Good luck.

Yeah, that thing was about ready to melt! It helped me to realize how great a job the Freezer is actually doing.

Did you place this fan in the front of the HD tray (ie closer to the air filter) or at the end of the tray (ie closer to the mobo)?

Thanks for the suggestion. I will be sure to try that.

I put the fan in the front of the HD tray by the air filter. There is a mount there for a 120mm fan. It definitely helped my temps so I hope it helps you too.

Do the standard size 120mm fans fit in the front lower and mid panels? How much of a pain was it to install those?

I also heard by reversing the top blowhole fan you could get some decrease in temps, but I havent tried it yet.

I have some questions if you guys could help out.
I am running Everest Ultimate Edition right now and getting some strange readings.

Rig:
Antec P180B
X2 4600 Manchester
Foxconn 6100K8MA
2 x 1GB Corsair 3500LLPRO
WD 160GB 7200
Antec 480W TP2.0

1)
My CPU #1 and #2 seem stable @ 35 to 40.
But my CPU temp (the top cpu reading) fluctuates greatly reading 2c then instantly changing to 28c and then up to 48c and things like that. I find it weird for the temps to change so fast like that. Should I be worried about this? I havent OCed it so I find this real strange, do I need to go buy an aftermarket cooler?
Maybe the HSF isn't seated right?

2)
In speedfan I am geting a remote temp of 57c and it shows the fire icon. How do I fix this?

3)
My HD seems to hover around 45-52 is this too high?

Please give some insight, thanks.
