I have to say I bought a tube of this at staples the other day and I'm beyond disappointed. When I use Artic Silver 5 I can actually spread the stuff very evenly on the cpu/gpu and the heatsink. Only very little of it comes off.

When I went to use the Antec Formula 7, I tried both the spreader that comes with it and the sandwhich bag trick. The stuff just pulled right off. Anyone else have this problem? Feel like I wasted 13 dollars...
 
warm it up first so its more of a liquid otherwise you get exactly what happened to you.
 
^ tons of complaints how hard it is to spread F7. I would try the above as well.

I am using it on my x79 setup and I agree it is super hard to spread. I just went with the "dot" method in the center of the CPU and my temps have been great.... but I think I'd try something else next time.
 
i always use the dot method and remove the cooler after a few min(no power up) to check the application if its a new compound, also attempt to re-check after a few heatup-cool down cycles/days to see how the stuff spread out. then clean and re-apply if needed(no alcohol if using the same compound, just a clean towel/q-tip as needed and inspect for debris/lint
 
Reviews for this stuff are pretty good. I'd also like to know what the deal is with it though. My temps are rather high and I'm not completely sure I applied it right.
I tried to rub some into the heatpipe gaps to begin with, then I applied to lines on the two heatpipes that make direct contact to the CPU. Then I put the heatsink on.

I pulled it off and saw that it hadn't spread completely in the middle so then I put a dot on the middle of the heatsink. Then put the heatsink back on.

Can anyone recommend a better compound?

Artic silver 5.. theres such little difference between any of the thermal pastes these days just stick with what we all know works.

but as far as spreading the F7 crap the only way i got it work was keeping my processor under load.. as it ran i could see the temps slowly drop over a 3-4 day period. i still don't think it spread out all the way since my temps still suck but i'm not screwing with it again til i replace this system.
 
FFS people! DO NOT SPREAD THE TIM! Just make a small rice grain dot and smash without lifting. Spreading it will create air pockets. Also, less TIM the better. You want as much metal to metal contact as possible, the tim is there to fill in the "holes".
