Can someone show me folding time/speed data on the difference between an Intel P4 1.8 GHz 512 kb cache 400 MHz fsb and a Celeron D 340 2.93 GHz 256 kb cache and 533 MHz fsb? Specifically I'm looking for expected ppd/ppw in Linux (Fedora 4) running under wine, but just a general comparison of the two would be fine.
 
Why would you use Wine when you could just use the linux client? I thought I heard somewhere that it folded a bit faster anyway.

Unfortunately i don't have any comparisons for you, just thought I'd ask that question
 
Right now, it doesn't matter, because QMDs got discontinued. Sounds like they may be coming back though in a few months.
 
Yeah, the windows client is already running so I'm not going to stop it now. Maybe I'll do a comparison of the two clients to see which is faster while QMD's are gone.
 
That would be an interesting comparison. Keep us posted. Hopefully someone will come along with an answer to your original question.
 
Any help? Mage, do you have any insite into the Linux client preformance campared to the win32 clieny running on wine? Or maybe someone has a breakdown of the average ppd/ppw for either of those two chips? Thanks!

 
I'm thinking that the Celeron would be faster in this case. I think that the higher cache of the P4 wouldn't counter the faster GHZ and FSB of the Celeron. Folding is mostly about the GHZ, and the FSB(but not as much). I've read threads about this and that's normally what's been decided on. I'd go for the Celeron, and maybe you can even overclock it some.

I'm guessing it's faster too but I'm curious to see if it's worth the time/effort/$ to do an upgrade. I cringe whenever I see the word Celeron so I'm being cautious about it. :p

 
I'm having to dig back in the memory banks, but I seem to remember that a (P4 based) Celeron was pretty close to the performance of a P4. I'm sure that given it's 1+GHz clock speed advantage that it would be a worthwhile switch.
